LEÑA at Pizzeria Penang Review and Beachfront Dining Guide

Dining right on the sand at LLEÑA at Pizzeria where the open wood-fired hearth meets the Batu Ferringhi sea breeze.

It had been more than a year since I last sat down for an open-fire feast at LEÑA at Pizzeria at Hard Rock Hotel Penang, and that felt far too long.

Leaving behind the neon buzz of Chulia Street and the constant shuffle of Tanjung Tokong, the road out of George Town strips away the noise until the city feels like a distant memory.

As you round the winding coastal bends past Tanjung Bungah, the air changes.

Long before the resort logos claimed this stretch of coastline, this was the site of the old Casuarina Hotel.

If you grew up or lived in Penang decades ago, that name opens a trapdoor straight into your twenties.

Early dates, cheap drinks, and the sheer, intoxicating feeling that driving twenty minutes up the coast was a grand adventure.

When Irene and I realized it had been over a year, we made the drive straight up to Batu Ferringhi.

Three iced mocktails served in tall glasses with Hard Rock guitar-shaped wooden stirrers on a wooden outdoor table, with a smiling woman blurred in the background.

Cool drinks on the table and Irene smiling in the background. Sunset drinks are officially served.

As the heavy salt air rolled through the car window along the Ferringhi strip, I realized I hadn’t forgotten the place.

I had just been waiting for a reason to go back.

LEÑA (firewood in Spanish) is built around the oldest, most honest trick: wood fire, heavy iron, and the ocean.

Under Director of F&B Rodrigo Benedicto and General Manager Michael Smeeton, the open hearth isn’t a gimmick or a photo backdrop. It’s the engine room.

Chef Rodrigo sums it up with zero pretense,

“En LEÑA es donde todo empieza, el fuego nuestro oficio, y la mesa donde todo se comparte.”

Fire is the craft. The table is where we gather.

You sit with your toes digging into the cooling sand. The Andaman Sea turns a deep, bruised indigo, and behind you, the hearth is crackling. That is when you remember why we make the drive.

What to Order at LEÑA at Pizzeria

A close-up shot of sweet prawns coated in garlic confit, chili, and smoked paprika olive oil served in a blue ceramic bowl at LEÑA at Pizzeria.

Don’t leave a single drop behind! That garlic and smoked paprika oil is meant for mopping up with warm flatbread.

Gambas Al Ajillo

If you love garlic like I do, just order this the second you sit down. The prawns arrive generously coated in olive oil, loaded with garlic confit, chilli and smoked paprika in a blue ceramic bowl.

The heads and tails stay on, giving that garlicky oil even more savoury flavour. The prawns are sweet with that perfect snappy bite, but honestly? The oil pooling at the bottom of the bowl is the real prize.

We tore off pieces of flatbread and wiped that dish clean. WW even said it would have been 1,000% better with a bowl of rice to stir into the oil and make pretend fried rice. I mean… he’s not wrong. That oil was way too good to waste. (RM48)

Hands using warm flatbread to scoop up rich labneh yogurt, roasted cherry tomatoes, and herb oil served in a deep blue bowl at LEÑA at Pizzeria.

No cutlery needed. Just tear off a piece of warm flatbread and scoop up a huge bite of creamy labneh and burst cherry tomatoes.

Tomato Confit & Labneh

After all that garlic and heat, this was such a lovely, refreshing contrast. The house-made labneh is thick, creamy and cool, spread across the bowl with sweet cherry tomatoes, herb oil and aged balsamic.

We (errrr… me gulps) grabbed pieces of warm flatbread, scooped up a big heap of labneh and tomatoes with our fingers, and dug right in. Light, vibrant and deeply satisfying, especially when everyone is sharing around the table. (RM36)

Hands holding a red platter of grilled ribeye steak, whole tiger prawns, and roasted tomatoes at LEÑA.

The star of the night; char-grilled ribeye and flame-kissed tiger prawns that stopped all conversation at the table!

Surf & Turf Platter

Coming with a group? Or just feeling particularly hungry? This is the heavy hitter.

A big maroon platter arrives loaded with a 200g char-grilled Black Angus ribeye and plump grilled tiger prawns.

The steak gets a lovely outer char without losing its juicy centre, and the prawns pick up all that rich smoky flavour from the open flame.

There was also creamy mashed potato, rocket salad and sauces for dipping. Now, this is where Dory got strategic.

I declined the beef, passed the prawns around and even peeled them for my friends. In return? I got to claim the mash.

Believe me, if you were me, you would have done exactly the same thing because that mash was THAT yummy. 😂

Forks lifting homemade spinach ravioli with pesto cream and edible flowers at LEÑA.

Silky homemade spinach ravioli with pesto cream—so pretty with those edible flowers, but even better when you take that first bite!

Ravioli Pesto

This was pure Italian comfort on a plate. The ravioli pouches are stuffed with spinach and ricotta, then tossed in a green pesto and brown butter sauce with parmesan.

The pasta is tender, the pesto is rich and herbaceous, and the whole thing just hits the spot when you’re craving something comforting by the sea.

Psssttt… this was Missy Lisa’s and my favourite. (RM46)

A hand pulling a slice of Mediterranean Lamb Kofta Pizza topped with smoky lamb, yoghurt, and greens at LEÑA.

Crisp, blistered crust with smoky lamb and tangy yoghurt—this is 100% my kind of pizza, and I happily wolfed down two big slices!

Mediterranean Lamb Kofta Pizza

I’m a sucker for a good wood-fired pizza, and this one really delivered.

The crust had those gorgeous, puffy, blistered edges from the stone oven.

It’s topped with spiced lamb kofta, crumbled feta, capsicum, red onion and mozzarella.

Then finished straight from the fire with cool mint yoghurt and fresh rocket.

Picking up a hot slice gives you smoky lamb, tangy yoghurt, fresh greens, and that crisp, blistered crust all in one bite.

Yep, that’s my kind of pizza and I wolfed down two big, satisfying slices! (RM60)

Hands shielding a pink birthday candle on a warm banana cake topped with Häagen-Dazs ice cream at LEÑA.

Shielding Irene’s birthday candle from the Ferringhi sea breeze! Nothing beats warm housemade banana cake paired with rich Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream.

Banana Cake

With a Little Birthday Magic for Irene

We ended the night with a sweet little belated birthday celebration for Irene.

Birthday was in June? Never mind. Life is better with celebrations, good food and memories made with friends. ❤️

The warm house-made banana cake arrived with a big scoop of Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries, caramelised banana cubes and crumble scattered across the plate.

And yes, there was a pink-striped birthday candle right on top.

Except the beach breeze kept trying to blow it out, so hands came in from both sides to shield the flame.

Instant birthday photo moment!

And when that cold vanilla ice cream started melting into the warm banana cake under the night sky… yep.

Perfect ending to our night out. (RM38)

The ultimate table spread when everyone is reaching across the table to grab a bit of everything!

How to Order for the Table

• For Two: Pick one starter (the Gambas or Labneh), one substantial meat, and a pizza or pasta to share before dessert.

• For a Group: Build around the Surf & Turf Platter (RM268) or Meat Platter (RM258), then add pasta, pizza, and a fresh salad.

Why LEÑA at Pizzeria is Worth the Drive from George Town

If you’re evaluating the food purely as a list of ingredients, you’re missing the point. You can find a good bowl of pasta or a grilled steak anywhere in George Town or Gurney.

The trip to Batu Ferringhi is for the unvarnished theatre of the night.

You’ll want to meet that quiet 6:15 PM window when the sky turns violet, the sea darkens, and warm lights flicker across the sand at Hard Rock Hotel.

It’s an excuse to kick off your shoes, feel the sand beneath your feet, and smell wood smoke riding the damp ocean breeze.

That’s when the magic happens.

Penang is so much bigger than the comfortable three-kilometer circle we build around ourselves in town.

LEÑA at Pizzeria is a reminder of what happens when you drive across the island, sit by the sea, and let the fire cook your dinner.
