Ipoh Best Soya Beancurd Woong Kee Tau Fu Fa Jln Ali Pitchay
Lily brought me to Ipohan’s favorite soya beancurd dessert place, Woong Kee Tau Fu Fa Jln Ali Pitchay when I visited Ipoh. Woong Kee comes highly recommended by the tau fu fa loving locals.
The stall started off as a small stall in Bercham and has now expanded to a bigger store. There’s seating in bar-like stools in the shop and customers actually get to step right in. Customers are more than happy with the self-service and sitting on the plastic stools on the veranda way.
EAT IT IN YOUR CAR!
Otherwise, you can opt to have it served in your car and you get to enjoy your dessert in air-conditioning comfort. For takeaway, just could call or honk for service.
I’m beginning to think that the successes of Ipoh’s soya bean dessert stops and their need to operate out of a hole in the wall shops. Compared to Ipoh’s other famous shop with it minuscule servings in tiny bowls, 旺记豆腐花 Woong Kee serves a decent sized bowl of soya bean curd. The notoriously long queues of the other tiny shop are absurd!
During weekends and public holidays, you will need both luck and patience to find a parking spot and queue just to have a bowl of dessert and a drink!
WHY DO VISITORS STILL QUEUE?
Simple. The texture of Wong Kee’s tau fu fah is unbelievably light and extremely soft. It’s so smooth that slides down your throat easily and feels so silky. This treat is lightly sweetened with your choice of strong ginger syrup, basic or palm sugar.
Woong Kee offers tau fu fah with a mix of mushy red beans, grass jelly, and shaved peanuts. You’re the boss of your dessert so; you can just choose one or two toppings or even take all three.
You could order chrysanthemum syrup instead of the ginger syrups. There are pumpkin tang yuan (pumpkin glutinous rice balls) if you like something fancy. As its just a dessert, some may ask if it’s halal or non-halal. I’m not an expert on this.
As for Lily and I, we stick to the old tested recipes and choose to take away out desserts to eat at home.
