You can’t separate a Malaysian from their Maggi Goreng.
When you think of it, simple noodles are such a big part of our lives.
Malaysians enjoy Maggi all day—breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, you name it—all day long!
Late-night supper and dinner are when the cravings kick in, and the obvious preference is for indulging in a bowl or a plate of Maggi Goreng.

Most Penangites will smile when you ask them what they secretly eat for a late supper—a simple Maggi Goreng recipe that you can recreate at home!
Everyone loves a plate of spicy Maggi Goreng (fried Maggi Mee) with a fried egg, and it’s that go-to comfort food you indulge in when you’re a student.
- You can have it when you have no idea what to eat for the night.
- It’s football night, and you’re too lazy to go out.
- Month-end, and you are broke.
You can have an instant soupy noodle, but it becomes irresistible when it’s cooked Maggi Gorengstyle.
I find it irresistible when I go to a Mamak joint and see others savoring a plate or two or more of that delectable Maggi Goreng.
For Malaysians, even though some tell us to eat fewer carbs at night and less salty and spicy, greasy food. We know all that.

What is Maggi Goreng?
A Maggi Goreng experience is like eating economy fried bi hun (vermicelli) at the morning market.
You get a nice full feeling that is homey and comforting.
However, when the craving kicks in, here’s a list of late-night and all-night stalls you can head to for your fix.
Mohamad Raffee
Mohamad Raffee is where I went to when I used to pull all-nighters in my office in Pulau Tikus.
The regulars (like me) know when the queues start and we like to go there before and after popular hours!
So I have none to show if you want to see the queue photos or pots brimming with curry.
We love the Nasi Kandar and the Ayam Goreng. Best served hot, juicy chicken thighs!
The Maggi Goreng has a tomatoey flavor, is moist and sticky, and has a gooey eggy texture on the noodles.
I prefer noodles to be a firmer and springy texture.
It is a local joint where regulars like me hang out and annoyingly wrong order “Ais Limau Panas” because of lack of sleep.
Restoran Mohammed Raffee Nasi Kandar
No. 295, Jalan Burma, Pulau Tikus, 10350 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Opens 24 Hours Daily
Phone: 04-228 8466
Restoran Yunus Khan (Jiao Sai) 鸟粪
When I first dropped by the outlet, I was surprised it was called Jiao Sai.
In Chinese, it means “bird poop.”
I asked the shop operator, and he said the original stall was under a tree, which explained the moniker “Jiao Sai” for Restoran Yunus Khan.
There are claims that this Maggi Goreng is ordinary. However, the zesty version comes in two variants: Original and Tom Yum.
The Original is Goreng Maggi Kari (Curry Flavour).
Even though the appearance may be unappealing, the taste of MAGGI Curry or Tom Yum Flavor, with the diced fried chicken and the runny yolk, is appealing.
Other Maggi Goreng stalls serve the entire piece of chicken aside from the noodles.
Restoran Yunus Khan (Jiao Sai) 鸟粪 (Behind Red Rock Hotel),
Abu Siti Lane, 10400 George Town, Penang
Business Hours: 5.00 PM to Midnight (Opens Daily)
Telephone: 011 – 1645 5440
Abu Mamak
KSB Cahaya also known as Abu Mamak, is a favorite joint with Penangites as a late-night supper.
It opens until 4.00 AM in George Town.
Tom Yam Maggi Goreng’s combination of Fried Chicken and a cup of Iced Milo is the most popular order here.
You can get a Nasi Lemak Bungkus or two, Maggi Goreng, Roti Hong Kong and Roti Canai.
The food here is salty and can be very spicy for those who don’t take the heat well. Like me!
Restaurant KSB Cahaya (Abu Mamak)
90, Lorong Macalister, George Town, Penang
Hours: 8.00 PM to 4.00 AM (Closed on Wednesdays)
Kedai Kopi Ali Dan Aleem
For a 24-hour joint, Kedai Kopi Ali Dan Aleem has a primary menu with a signature Nasi Lemak Goreng.
Since we are going for Maggi Goreng, here’s some advice: order the Maggi Goreng Tom Yum Special.
Kedai Kopi Ali Dan Aleem
21, Jalan Lunas, Kampung Syed, 10250 George Town, Penang
Hours: 24 Hours (Closed on Sundays)
Alamak
The MAGGI Goreng is everyone’s favorite, with crispy Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) and a sunny-side-up egg.
From the Mamak stall, Alamak is now a trendy Mamak stall at Krystal Square, Bukit Gambir, Penang.
For those who enjoy their staple Maggi Goreng, Alamak has added the best Mamak food, such as Melted Cheeseburgers, Chicken Chopburgers, and nasi lemak for supper.
Alamak
175, Jalan Argyll, George Town, 10050 George Town, Penang
Hours: 6.30 PM to 2.30 AM (Opens Daily)
Telephone: 018-231 8018

Mamu Maggi Goreng (Car Park)
It is located within the Jalan Anson Car Park, so it is not one of the places you might spot as you drive by.
The curry-flavored noodles are very eggy and have a soggy texture.
If you’re not concerned with your cholesterol readings, add a sunny-side-up egg or two for a gooey runny MAGGI Goreng experience.
