Our Season (Hyu-ga) 2023 Movie Review

I recently watched a Korean film, Our Season (Hyu-ga) 2023 that moved me in unexpected ways.

Initially, I thought it was just another documentary about cooking traditional Korean dishes in a village.

Our Season 2023

The story of Bok-ja and her daughter, Jin-joo, is a testament to the enduring power of a mother’s love and the sacrifices she makes, often hidden in the simplest of actions.

Our Season begins with a heartbreaking premise: a mother, Bok-ja, who passed away alone in Korea.

The scene then shifts to Jin-joo, the daughter, who returns from the USA to live in her late mother’s old home and café, burdened by guilt and daily struggles.

It wasn’t until Bok-ja was granted a three-day vacation on Earth from heaven that they were able to reunite.

With the guidance of a companion from the afterlife, Bok-ja embarks on a poignant journey to reconnect with Jin-joo.

It was a journey filled with longing, hope, and the bittersweet realization of life’s fleeting moments.

As I watched their story unfold, I was struck by how much Bok-ja’s love was woven into the meals she prepared for her daughter when she was a child.

The dishes were more than just food; they were expressions of care, understanding, and unspoken words that only a mother can convey.

I was reminded of my own experiences with my mother and how her cooking wasn’t just about sustenance but about nurturing the soul.

A flood of memories and emotions that made me feel like I was right there with Bok-ja and Jin-joo.

The movie showed meaningful flashback as if to show their ‘Our Season.’

Seeing her mother taste Jin-joo’s cooking, a wish they both shared, was profoundly moving.

Jin-joo had longed to cook a special birthday meal for her mother, and her mother had wished for this too.

After all those years, it brought tears to my eyes.

Each bite seemed to rekindle lost memories and reconnect with the love that had always been there, overshadowed by time and life’s challenges.

I could feel the emotional weight of every spoonful, a realization that the simplest gestures—like preparing a favorite dish—carry the most profound meanings.

Watching Jin-joo’s emotional journey as she felt compelled to replicate her late mother’s dumpling fillings resonated deeply with me.

OUR SEASON is a Fantasy Drama About a Mother’s Miraculous 3-Day Visit from Heaven to Stay with Her Daughter.

It made me reflect on how I used to watch from a distance and never helped out, like Jin-joo.

We never shared the same mother-daughter cooking experience.

By the end of the film, I was overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude for the sacrifices my mother and all mothers make, often without acknowledgment.

It’s a universal truth that transcends cultures and generations, a testament to the enduring power of a mother’s love.

Bok-ja’s three days on Earth weren’t just about saying goodbye but about ensuring that Jin-joo knew, through every lovingly prepared meal, that she was cherished beyond words.

The film beautifully captures the idea that a mother’s love transcends even death, manifesting in the simplest of acts that often go unnoticed.

Most of the time, it was unspoken words and wishes buried deep in the heart – overshadowed by perceived hurts and misunderstandings.

I walked away from the movie with a heavy heart but also a renewed appreciation for my own mother and the little ways she showed her love.

It’s a poignant reminder that sometimes, the love we seek has always been right in front of us.

If we notice that it is wrapped in a warm meal, waiting to be noticed.

Watch Our Season today and let it inspire you with its powerful story and emotional depth.
