Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant is the go-to for great Vegetarian meals in Little India.
I have been eating here since the 80s with my colleagues and friends I’ve made over the years.
Each outing is always accompanied by laughter and great vegetarian dishes that we all enjoy.
We would visit the restaurant for hands down one of the best vegetarian Indian meals in George Town.
You get tasty meals that are at value for money and lovely drinks.

Woodlands is a pure-veg Indian restaurant in George Town, Penang. It serves classics such as dosas, idlis, thalis, and rice meals.
The restaurant serves both North Indian and South Indian food.
It has an outside counter with Indian sweets.

Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant Breakfast Options
There are many delicious food options to choose from – idly, vada, masala dosa, and poori masala.
I’ve tried them, and my favorite is none other than the Chana Bhatura.
“Chana Bhatura or simply a Bhatura is food to die for.”
I know I am prone to exaggeration since I’ve had so many Bhaturas in my life – I’ll be dead now.
If you are there for lunch, they have a recommended dish called the Woodlands Special Thali.
They have everything you’ll want to eat on the set. From 6.00 pm until 10:00 pm
Woodlands Special Thali
7-course meal for one person includes:
- One (1) idly
- One (1) vadai
- One (1) mini masala dosai
- One (1) poori masala
- Uppuma
- Kesari (sweet)
- Tea/brew coffee
I will make it a point to head there for lunch to try the Woodlands Special Thali set!

Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant Breakfast
The menu here is extensive, and the quality of the food is fresh and delicious.
One the menu is a wide choice of dishes that will please all palates.
If you want to eat quietly do visit the restaurant early in the morning.
At peak breakfast hours, there are always large groups coming in and out for the delicious food.
I have been here on many occasions with different friends, and the food and drinks are always delicious.
Regardless of what anyone else says, the wait staff is always friendly to me.
Some people comment that the service is a bit relaxed when clearing the table, but the food and cheap prices more than makeup for it.
Just be a little patient, and everything will be fine.
Remember the Slow Food Movement?
Be patient.
I have eaten many dosas over the years at many restaurants, and this restaurant has by far the BEST DOSAS in Penang.
Masala Rava Dosa
The thin, crispy Masala Rava Dosa is made with semolina flour, cumin, ginger, coriander leaves, and green chili.
These aromatic, crisp crepes are best eaten with coconut chutney and vegetable kurma.
Masala Ghee Dosai
The Masala Ghee Dosai is so long and huge that I struggled to finish it. Please remember to share with a friend!
Poori Set
It’s pretty hard to say no to two innocent-looking Poori – these make great breakfast buddies.
For dinner, the side dishes I always order because I couldn’t stay away from – and will recommend are
Bendi Masala
The Bendi (Okra or Ladies’ Fingers) is really tasty!
Palak Paneer
Has lots of spinach flavor with healthy paneer (cottage cheese cubes)
Chana Masala
Indians eat Chana Masala for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a quick snack—I could eat it for all my meals.
The Chickpeas or Garbanzo Beans are loaded with folate, iron, fiber, and vitamin B.
It is so delicious and healthy and, of course, best eaten with Chana Bhatura.
Snacks
- Samosa
- Pakora
Some people may prefer the Samosas and Curry Puff at the corner stall at Market Cross.
For me, the most memorable and best-tasting Pakoras were the bags of fried goodies I used to buy when I worked in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
It all depends on your taste – the fried food at Woodlands is good.
Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant Review
One of our favorite restaurants, you will love a meal here and end up as a regular for years after.
The prices are excellent compared to some other restaurants and cafes nearby.
Even if you go all out and order multiple dishes, I assure you the nice Anne will tell you that you have over-ordered.
The food is tasty, delicious, and cheap.
Even if you aren’t a vegetarian, I assure you that this restaurant will not disappoint in taste.
Tip: Try their Bru Coffee (my favorite order), Masala Tea, or Filter Coffee.
