For travelers tracking the evolution of Light Street boutique stays, a massive transformation has taken place. While the previous operation of Chambers Hotel had grown dated and run-down, the current management has successfully completed a comprehensive 2026 property-wide refresh.
The entire heritage property has been completely revitalized to premium, pristine standards, making it exceptionally fresh and clean. Key modern upgrades include:

The Room I Keep Thinking About
Because this hotel was carved out of a landmark civic building, the rooms have these gorgeous architectural quirks that completely break the boring hotel mold.
Room 101 Full Layout
Room 101 in all its refreshed glory. The layout effortlessly pairs busy, character-rich elements like herringbone parquet floors and green-paneled wood accents with plenty of functional space.
Room 101 occupies a totally unique corner location.
Unlike the central rooms that follow a standard rectangular box grid, this room’s irregular footprint actually follows the historic curve of the building.
It’s easily one of the most distinctive layouts in the hotel—though I have my eye on Room 107 next, which also has a massive corner footprint!
Officially, it’s categorized similarly in size to the other Deluxe Rooms (around 25 to 26 square meters), but its corner position gives it a noticeably more spacious, generous character.
Several factors completely trick your brain into thinking you’re lounging in a massive suite:
The Uninterrupted 15 ft 6 in (4.7 m) Window: It spans almost the entire exterior wall, flooding the space with incredible natural light throughout the day.
The View Factor: Instead of staring directly into a neighboring building’s concrete wall, you get uninterrupted views across Padang Kota Lama all the way to the sea.
High Heritage Ceilings: The vertical scale gives you actual room to breathe.
Working Here
Although The Chambers doesn’t try to compete with the Eastern & Oriental’s sprawling, multi-room heritage suites, Room 101 offers a surprisingly grand experience for its category.
Compared with many standard, claustrophobic business hotel rooms in George Town, that panoramic heritage window and park view make it feel so much more generous than a simple floor plan suggests.
It is my absolute favorite spot to escape and write deep into the night.
The expansive white writing desk gives you plenty of room to spread out laptops, reference materials, and legal briefs.
Another angle of the refresh. The placement of the armchair allows you to seamlessly pivot between looking out the historic windows or settling in to watch TV. The design here completely shuns the sterile, boring minimalist look.
Instead, the hallways welcome you with gorgeous pastel hues of pinks, greens, and blues, leading into a calming palette of beige and mint green inside the suites.
The white solid wood furniture keeps the massive room feeling airy and light, and the herringbone solid wood floors are an absolute dream to walk barefoot on.
When the afternoon sun streams through the glass, the room fills with a gorgeous, moody light.
Open the windows, and you can look straight past the drapes across the green fields of the Esplanade all the way to the sea.
