You will not find Hainan Lighthouse Cafe Penang unless a local brings you to this OG spot for the best old school Hainanese food in Penang.
The café is tucked away inside the pre-war row of homes right in the compound of St Francis Xavier Church SFX on Penang Road.
Believe me, it is always fully packed with locals chasing genuine heritage flavors.
If you want to eat lunch, try coming over just before 12 noon to get a seat in the small AC dining area.
Otherwise, you’ll be sweating bullets and baking under the tin roof for your meal.
In Penang, the tropical heat commands food to be eaten in the comfort of AC.
Suffering pangs of sweat running down my face and smelling like a Hainanese chicken chop in the office is definitely not elegant!
I shared with some friends a set lunch I had at a hotel recently.
While it had free flow soups, salad, and fruit for dessert, the chicken chop looked like it used a bed of fries as a blotter for the sorry chicken.
My friends kesian me.
The following day, they promptly took me to Hainan Lighthouse Cafe Penang for the best chicken chop in town.
I’m updating my ultimate Hainan Chicken Chop list because this spot didn’t just move the needle, it broke the scale!
Why Hainan Lighthouse Cafe Penang Passes the Ultimate Grandpa Test
We ordered the two thumbs up items from the simple menu!
The ultimate senior citizen litmus test never lies. You already know it’s legit because the mean average customer age is easily 50+.
During my visit, I watched an 80 year old grandpa and grandma chowing down, happily crushing these XXL plates of chicken chop and noodles like absolute champions.
When the generation that grew up on authentic Hainanese western food chooses to spend their afternoon here, you know the culinary lineage is intact.
The moment you step in, the aroma hits you. It’s unapologetically, gloriously lardy fragrant.
No shortcuts, no modern health warnings.
Everything is like your grandma (who lived to 100) cooking pure, rich, nostalgic flavor with everything cooked in lard oil.
The café treats heritage recipes with total respect.
Packed to the rafters inside means grabbing a wooden table out front under the awning.
What We Ordered and Walloped
No other words could describe our meal other than walloped.
There is no finesse here; we just stopped talking, grinning and giggling, and started chomping!
Hainanese Chicken Chop XXL
The absolute king of old school comfort food topped with that perfectly balanced gravy at Hainan Lighthouse Cafe Penang
Massive, crisp batter, juicy interior, and a gravy so perfectly balanced it will make you forget every other chicken chop in town.
I cleaned my plate so completely spotless but left the table, chair, and utensils intact.
The food was so glorious that I declined their free flow ice cream. I was just too gloriously full!
Hainanese Thick Cut Pork Chop
Danny ordered this beast and loved it too much to share. The rest of us could only throw envious side glances at his meat while he happily guarded his plate LOL.
Definitely a must order if you want a massive, juicy pork chop that nobody is going to share.
Just do not expect Danny to share his pork chop! 😂
Char Hor Fun and Ee Fu Mee
Sharing a plate of Hailam Char that instantly whet my appetite for dinner takeaways
Guess who finished her entire plate clean and then immediately ordered Char Hor Fun and Ee Fu Mee to tapao home?
No regrets, old school is still the best school.
The Char Hor Fun is packed with intense wok hei and a luscious, silky egg gravy, while the Ee Fu Mee is braised to perfection, soaking up all that savory, lardy goodness without becoming mushy.
The noodles proved that the kitchen really knows how to make proper comforting dishes.
Just look at the feast the two divas, Danny, and aunty walloped. We even crossed paths with a polite young Boy Scout from Penang Free School PFS.
It’s amazing how this little heritage spot inside a church compound bridges generations, from 80 year old regulars to school kids.
