Double Fold Cafe Tanjung Bungah

Double Fold Cafe is the latest café to open in Tanjung Bungah, and finding it is a bit of a treasure hunt.

It is located across from Dalat School.

Unless you remember it as the old home of the First Tajani Ambulance along Jalan Tanjung Bungah, you might miss it.

Double Fold Cafe has dual frontages. A better way in is to park along Jalan Oldham and enter from the back.

As you approach, a white fibre glass fountain with faux angels greets you. It creates a slightly fancy yet approachable café vibe.

The Buzz of the Afternoon Crowd

We arrived around 3:30 in the afternoon and the place was buzzing.

There was a queue to get a table, so we waited outside and sat on the garden furniture.

It was too hot and humid to sit comfortably outdoors.

We got a number for our table and went inside to find the bakery shelf, barista, and cashier at the far end.

It would have worked better if the cashier was near the staircase, so we could order, pay, and head straight to our seat.

The concept is a little like Kenny Hill Bakery.

But with the limited footprint of half a semi-detached house, it did not work quite as well.

Upstairs Nook

We ended up upstairs, which is divided into two sections.

At the top of the staircase, you reach the main café area.

The curved seating in the middle is interesting.

Adding more chairs and a few lush potted plants would make it feel cozier and added privacy.

We chose a spot in the “garden” area, the enclosed and air-conditioned part of the old terrace.

The owners seemed to aim for a zen vibe with a plant mister, channeling Bao Teck Tea House and the Peninsula House.

But the setup and location completely missed the mark.

The garden seating looked inviting, but the afternoon heat made sitting by the windows unbearably hot!

A quirky “garden” corner features plants, crushed granite aggregate, a plant mister trying to create an indoor jungle.

Oddly a single sofa.

Nearly every corner was occupied by people filming themselves for social media.

My cheeky companion kept whispering, “Incoming influencer, table one,” “Incoming influencer, table two, three,” LOL.

And honestly, that summed up most of our visit.

My other companion shrugged and said,

“It’s alright. We’re the customers. We’re not getting paid to promote anything.”

Signature Tiramisu

We made do without the clinking of espresso cups and claimed a corner as our temporary home.

My companions went for an au lait and a hot chocolate.

I lingered over a French Americano, which is simply espresso with hot water.

My coffee was a single shot and tasted fruity, a little too acidic for my liking, but it kept the afternoon moving.

The tiramisu in a vintage cup was sold out, and apparently everyone wanted a slice and a story for social media.

Oh well, that’s little Penang for you.

Menu Highlights

French-inspired coffee at Double Fold Cafe: an au lait, a hot chocolate, and a French espresso alongside the menu.

The menu goes beyond drinks, including pastries, big breakfasts, pasta, risotto, soup, and even nasi lemak.

Brunch, an afternoon catch-up, or a relaxed drink session all work here.

We had hoped to stay for dinner, but the café closes at 6, so we left around 5.

Double Fold Cafe brings a mix of French-inspired décor and quirky charm to the neighborhood.

It is not life changing, but it is still worth a stop if you are curious.

Or don’t mind the drive just for a small change of scenery.

The coffee is decent and the staff are friendly.

The little angel fountain adds a nice touch and the upstairs garden nook is interesting enough to comment.

The heat in the garden area might hurry you along, but that happens often in little Penang.
