A Feast of Indonesian Flavors

The first thing Remy and I did after checking in early at 6:30 PM was survey the food.

We loved Penang Kitchen‘s spacious layout and its location at Courtyard by Marriott Penang.

It’s in George Town, but as we say, away from the maddening crowds.

The lovely Marcomm Manager, Cynthia Lowe, and her capable assistant, Surin, warmly greeted us.

Congratulations are in order!

This vibrant, flavorful dining experience takes guests on a culinary journey through Indonesia.

Tempo Dulu BBQ Buffet

Tempo Dulu, meaning “older days” in Indonesian, celebrates Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage.

Food has always brought people together, and recipes are passed down through generations using simple yet flavorful ingredients.

The Tempo Dulu BBQ Buffet Dinner brings this tradition to life, offering an authentic taste of Indonesia with beloved, time-honored dishes.

The buffet aims to recapture these moments, offering guests an authentic taste of Indonesia’s heritage with time-honored dishes.

With that, we were ready to start our feast.

BBQ Stations Outside

A true meat lover’s paradise, the irresistible BBQ stations will draw you in!

Something about the smell of grilled meats and seafood pulls you in. That was our first stop.

Two large chillers filled with thick cuts of beef, lamb, huge tiger prawns, sausages, and trays upon trays of skewered, marinated beef and chicken satay.

Two pit masters and the chef expertly grilled the meat, seafood, and satay.

There were also two large pots of delicious sauces: BBQ sauce and black pepper sauce.

The BBQ sauce is even better when mixed with the black pepper sauce.

  • A1 sauce for steaks and lamb
  • Thai sauce for prawns—simply delicious!

For satay lovers, there was beef and chicken satay.

Our favorite was the beef satay!

It was moist, perfectly grilled, with delightful charred bits, served with a rich, flavorful satay sauce.

Inside Penang Kitchen

The menu featured a delightful mix of familiar favorites and new Indonesian dishes, offering a feast for the eyes and the stomach.

The Japanese sushi corner was among the regular suspects, showcasing a mound of fresh, thick-cut salmon sashimi and a tempting spread of seafood on ice and oysters.

I love the curries—especially those rich in rempah, turmeric, and coconut cream.

They’re my all-time favorites to enjoy with white rice.

Remy and I ate so much that we were full and happy!

In addition to these highlights, the buffet features a wide array of Indonesian-inspired dishes and other local favorites.

Tempo Dulu is a must-visit for lovers of Southeast Asian cuisine.

Sup Buntut (Oxtail Soup)

There were two standout soup options: a creamy mushroom soup and the incredible Sop Buntut, a 10/10 Indonesian oxtail soup.

This hearty dish is infused with layers of flavor thanks to the fragrant blend of bay leaves, coriander seeds, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, and cardamom pods.

These spices add depth and warmth, creating a comforting, aromatic broth that envelopes the senses.

After being simmered for hours, the tender oxtail and vegetables release their essence into the broth.

The results an incredibly rich, savory soup with a beautifully complex flavor profile.

Sop Buntut is an Indonesian culinary treasure that offers comfort and satisfaction.

The slow-cooked delight warms both body and soul, making it the ultimate comfort food for any occasion.

We especially loved the Sup Buntut (Oxtail Soup), which was delicious, extra peppery, and full of lovely herbs like cardamom pods and star anise.

It’s a must-try for anyone attending the buffet.

Desserts You Must Eat

Make sure to save room for the dessert corner.

The pastry team here crafts some of the most delightful desserts in Penang.

You’ll find a vibrant array of pastries, a decadent chocolate fountain, refreshing Ais Kacang, and the indulgent Musang King ice cream.

I must emphasize that the luxurious Musang King ice cream and anything chocolate are my personal favorites.

It’s the perfect way to end your meal on a sweet note.
