I am pleased that the Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow is the best investment for sound sleep.
I am an insomniac.
For the past five years, I have been unable to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night.
I keep my sleep schedule – same bedtime and wake time every day.
Napping in the day is an issue.
If you have experienced insomnia, you will understand how awful it feels to lie awake at night until the next morning.
I avoid large meals and beverages (think warm Milo or milk) before bed, and I even use Sleep Sprays on my pillow.
At one point, I almost gave up trying to sleep – I wasn’t getting enough rest.
When I travel, I would apply my Melatonin Cream and inhale the Lavender Essential Oil at night to help relax muscles, so I fall into a deep sleep.
Sleeping Like A Baby
As sleep eluded me, I started researching my bed – the mattress and pillows.
When I stayed in good hotels, falling asleep wasn’t hard.
So, the ambiance of the hotel room, lighting, temperature, and the whole package must be considered.
The mattress, duvet, and a lot of pillows.
Back home, I thought getting a cotton fiber pillow would help.
As a baby, my pillow was made of cotton fiber—the kampong-style Bantal Kapas.
Most Malaysians and Singaporeans grew up sleeping on a cotton-filled pillow.
Old grandmothers, mothers, and aunts would change the cotton fiber yearly.
The Cotton fibers would clump up easily.
As children, we would end up with misshapen saliva and tear-stained pillow which doesn’t support our neck and shoulders.
Worst still, if you are a stomach sleeper—the pillow becomes a dent that fits your face!
For a good rest at night, we need three things :
- a cool room
- good mattress
- a comfortable pillow
Let’s have a little Pillow Talk…
Your home is probably your most significant investment, but your bed is your next most significant investment—you spend at least 6 to 8 hours daily on it.
For your lifetime, say 80 years, that’s a whopping 200,000 hours and a third of your lifetime.
Regarding good sleep quality, pillows are almost as important as your mattress.
I fell into the rabbit hole and ran after phantom pillows when I finally fell into a restless sleep. – Doris Lim
When was the last time you checked your pillows?
It surprised me that I had been using my favorite pillow for so long that I couldn’t remember when I bought it.

How to pick the perfect pillow?
Sleeping on a worn-out pillow, scrunching, and folding it up every night to get comfortable is terrible for getting a good rest.
Even if your pillow is relatively new, it might not provide the right support for your neck.
Why does your pillow matter?
Having a good posture when you sleep is essential.
A right pillow helps support a healthy sleep posture and is the key to sleeping soundly every night.
Using a pillow that is too flat or too high is just as bad as sleeping without one—you’re likely to wake up with a stiff and painful neck, shoulders, and back and insomnia.
Lack of support puts pressure on your neck muscles and spine alignment.
The best pillow is one that feels comfortable to
- rest your head on, support your head, neck, and shoulders, and
- matches your mattress with the same firmness
When is it time to replace your pillow?
Natural pillows made of cotton last longer than synthetic ones.
Memory Foam Pillows typically last longer- you can look upward of three years.
Higher-quality pillows will last longer than inexpensive ones.
As a general rule, replace bed pillows after 18 months.
Like your mattress, your pillow is the best investment in getting high-quality sleep.
If you average about 7-8 hours of sleep a night—that’s over 2,500 hours a year!
If you are a terrible sleeper, your pillow gets worn out faster, and you might not get the support you need.
For sleep quality, pillows are as important as your mattress.
How to inspect your pillow?
- Take off the pillowcase and examine your pillow.
- Does your pillow smell?
- Is it stained with sweat, saliva, or tears?
- Is it moldy?
These are all signs that your pillow has outlived its lifespan.
Overtime pillows collect moisture and cause mildew, mold, and even fungus.
Dead skin cells will breed dust mites, which can trigger allergies.
Some odors can interfere with breathing, making it harder to sleep well.
If your pillow passes the sight and smell test, it’s time to do the fold test:
- Fold your pillow in half.
- If it doesn’t return to its original shape – it’s time for a replacement.
- For natural cotton fill pillows, do an over-arm test. If the cushion drapes and hangs over your extended arm- it is a dead pillow.
Your Pick-a-Pillow Guide – That Pillow Menu
One of my favorite things is the PILLOW MENU whenever I stay in luxury hotels and resorts worldwide!
I get to try an à la carte menu of different luxury pillows.
Selecting a pillow depends on an individual’s preference and sleeping style.
While there is no right pillow, one size, shape, or material that fits all, you can find your pillow by instinct.
What feels most comfortable by size, weight, and height is probably the most appropriate for you.
Which Fillings To Buy For Your Pillow?
Various fill options are available for pillows—each has its imperfections and advantages, depending on your choice.
Goose Down
Manufacturers typically prepare exceptionally soft pillows, either goose or duck fibers.
If you are allergic and worry about sensitivity reactions to down and feathers, look for hypo-allergenic down.
Good quality down pillows with allergy-free properties are expensive but worth it if this is the pillow you prefer.
Synthetic Down
While the synthetic down pillows are less pricey, they require changing more often.
Polyester fill
Polyester fill pillows are an economical pillow choice compared to other pillow types.
These range from medium to soft but will flatten with usage and require frequent replacement.
Cotton
Cotton pillows are naturally hypo-allergenic and resistant to mold and dust mites.
If you are hyper-allergic and have chemical sensitivities, cotton pillows are a smart choice.
The only drawback is cotton pillows are flat, firm, and plump.
Memory Foam
Memory foam pillows conform to your head shape as they soften to the contours of your head, neck, and shoulders while distributing your weight evenly across their surface.
High-quality Memory Foam Pillows with built-in ventilation can be uncomfortable and cause sweating as they keep heat.
When they are brand new, there is a distinct smell that is bothersome to some people.
Does sleeping position matter to pillow choice?
YES. Few things can improve your night’s sleep as much as the perfect pillow.
All of us switch sleeping positions throughout the night.
While tossing and turning occur briefly at night, most people have a favorite position when they sleep.
I am a side sleeper who spends some time on my back during the night.
Finding the right pillow is bewildering, with so many options available.
Gone are the days of grabbing a filled pillow off the department store shelf. Instead, you have a wide range of pillow materials to consider.
I want a pillow that works best for me in all my sleeping positions and, most importantly, a pillow that doesn’t occasionally shift to one side.
Latex
While Latex Pillows hold their shape and are firmer, they are bulky and uncomfortable. If you like soft, squishy pillows, these aren’t for you.
The plus point is latex is resistant to mold and dust mites.
Some Latex Pillows are countered and designed for extra support to the head and neck.
So as I researched Latex Pillows, I hesitated to rush out and buy one off the rack.
Benefits of Latex Pillows
✓ Anti-Dust Mite
✓ Anti-Bacteria
✓ Anti-Microbial
I had some questions about Latex Pillows and found some answers.
Do Latex Pillows go flat?
Latex Pillows don’t quickly turn flat or lose their shape.
How long do Latex Pillows last?
A Latex Pillow lasts 18 to 36 months since it is more durable and deters mold, fungus, and dust mites.
However, if you have dust mite and mold allergies, the buildup will bother you more than others.
When do you need to change your pillows? Probably when your allergies flare up continuously.
Can Latex Pillows be washed?
Latex is sturdy but can still mold if not dried quickly, and a Latex Pillow can not go in the washing or drying machine.
I figured that washing the pillow regularly and the inner sleeve would be good enough.
Do Latex Pillows smell?
I was concerned about the rubber-like smell, unpleasant scent, and natural latex and wondered how to eliminate it.
Do Latex Pillows get dust mites?
Since latex is only resistant, dust mites are still a problem that can’t be eliminated.
What are the benefits of Latex Pillows?
Comfort. Since latex is exceptionally dense, it holds its shape and softness for much longer than cotton.
The most significant benefit is that its elastic properties allow the pillow to flex throughout the night, ensuring undisrupted sleep.
Do Latex Pillows soften over time?
Latex provides ongoing comfortable support and, over time, will soften gradually.
Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow
Since I abruptly shifted to working from home, the COVID-19 lockdown conditions are far from ideal.
Remote work, social distancing, distance learning, and Zoom meetings have damaged my neck, shoulders, and back.
I spend many hours writing on a laptop on my dining table, which is not, at best, ergonomically high for me.
After all, the inactivity was unbearable at home, and my dining table was the writing table the whole day.
I have been having a tension headache as I had problems falling asleep.
Only after a few years of insomnia did I realize a good night’s sleep is essential for my health.

Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow – Product Review
After much research and reading online, I discovered the technology that made the pillow.
I carefully considered my sleeping pattern, insomnia, allergies, and chemical sensitivities before I invested in a well-made product—the Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow.
As I started sleeping on my side, I needed a firmer, thicker pillow. The thickness fits the distance between your ear and the outside shoulder.
I know I lie on my back when I wake up in the middle of the night.
I realized I needed a flatter pillow to align my head and neck.
Generally, side and back sleepers are most comfortable on Latex Pillows.
Latex provides extra firmness and support where needed most, around the neck and shoulders.
The Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow provided additional support while maintaining the softness that’s comfortable for me.
Is a Latex Pillow or Memory Foam Pillow better?
I have used a Memory Foam Pillow for a few years.
In comparison, Latex Pillow feels immediately softer to the touch than memory foam.
After using the Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow, I find it stays comfortable even in the afternoons – when I nap with the fan turned on.
In the mornings, I wake up refreshed from the night’s sleep without any tension in my neck and shoulder.
Best of all, I slept through the night without waking up or slipping off my new pillow.
In conclusion, Origin Superior Coolmax® Latex Pillow is the best investment for sound sleep for anyone with insomnia.
