Where is Halloween first celebrated?
Halloween is an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
This day also marked the end of summer and the years’ harvest. It was the beginning of a cold dark winter.
Halloween is often associated with death as many homeless poor die from the bitter cold of winter.
On the night of October 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain. A festival marking the return for otherworldly spirits and the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
A belief is akin to the “Hungry Ghost” festival in Malaysia.
The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating sweet treats.
Watch out for the “Hand”
For some of us, we remember the funny, comical, not so scary “Hand” from the 1960s TV series The Addams Family.
“Thing” is a fictional character in The Addams Family series.
“Thing” was initially conceived as a whole creature that was too horrible to see in person.
The only part of it that was tolerable was its human hand. ~ Wikipedia
All Saints Day
In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and all martyrs on All Saints Day.
The church replaced the Celtic festival of the dead with a related church-sanctioned holiday. November 2, All Souls’ Day, is a day to honor the dead.
