1 Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
The Blue Mansion is the best known is the UNESCO award-winning Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (CFTM) on Leith Street.
CFTM is repurposed as a boutique hotel with a fine dining restaurant.
The house sits elegantly on Leith Street and was known as “Hakka Millionaires’ Row.”
In a bygone era of the Straits Settlements, Chinese migrant Cheong Fatt Tze’s rags-to-riches is one of hard work and sharp business acumen.
When Cheong built his mansion, he set out a style that would later be called eclectic.
It was a well-thought-out “hotchpotch” of marrying different styles of architecture.
Firstly the mansion is built in the traditional Chinese courtyard style.
Then Cheong incorporates the Western influences with stained glass windows, wrought-iron railing, and spiral staircases.
Thus, the “new buildings” earned the name ang mo lau (foreign house).
You can experience fine dining at Indigo Restaurant Blue Mansion. In the former home of a first-class Mandarin in the Manchu government!

5 Suffolk House
The restoration of Penang’s first grand mansion, Suffolk House, is a journey best described as timelessness restored.
Home of Penang founder Francis Light, the beautiful mansion was built in the Georgian style.
When Light died, they left the house to his wife, Martina Rozells. Suffolk House served as a residence for Penang’s early governors.
In later years, it was left in utter ruins and despair before it was rescued and restored.
The successful conservation of the historic Suffolk House marks the restoration of Penang as the Pearl of the Orient.
