It was a well-thought-out “hotchpotch” of marrying different styles of architecture.
Firstly the mansion is built in the traditional Chinese courtyard style.
Then Cheong incorporates the Western influences with stained glass windows, wrought-iron railing, and spiral staircases.
Thus, the “new buildings” earned the name ang mo lau (foreign house).

2 Thirty Two at The Mansion
The most beautiful in Penang is the Italianate-style seaside villa now named The Mansion.
Built in 1926 by Leong Yin Kean, the son of a tin miner, the house was left in a desolate state to be used as a motorbike center!
The historical building has been restored to reveal its grandeur. Every minute detail of the original building, including its beautiful Italian mosaic decorations, has been fully restored.
The ground floor houses a fine-dining restaurant and bar with a seaside terrace. The Beach Bar serves tapas and drinks.

3 Hardwicke House
The prominent lawyer Lim Cheng Ean, Hardwicke Hall was built in the nineteenth century.
The building sits at the junction of Pangkor Road and Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. Lim was Penang’s first Chinese magistrate in the Straits Settlements Legislative Council.
Hardwicke Hall was named after a mansion owned by the Duke of Devonshire in Devonshire, England.

4 MacAlister Mansion
Penang tycoon and philanthropist Choong Lye Hock bought the mansion in the 1890s.
Lye Hock is the father of a local millionaire, Ch’ng Eng Hye, and the grandfather of badminton legend Datuk Eddy Choong.
Known as Macalister Mansion (MM), the restored mansion has eight rooms, raising the bar for global travelers seeking distinct stays in a boutique hotel.
On the premises are two restaurants, The Dining Room and The Living Room, and two bars, Bagan Bar and The Den.

5 Suffolk House
The restoration of Penang’s first grand mansion, Suffolk House, is a journey best described as timelessness restored.
Home of Penang founder Francis Light, the beautiful mansion was built in the Georgian style.
When Light died, they left the house to his wife, Martina Rozells. Suffolk House served as a residence for Penang’s early governors.
In later years, it was left in utter ruins and despair before it was rescued and restored.
