The refurbished Georgetown Wines Penang on Leith Street was a former stable or mews with living quarters above the servants!
In the 19th century Penang, the money was used to own horse carriages, and the horses were sheltered there!
The mews face each other with a tiny courtyard in the center.
Space Making of the Mews
Apart from changing the roofs, installing new windows, and strengthening the floorboards, the owners decided to strip off the lime plaster to expose the century-old brick-and-mortar walls.
The reward is a charmingly weathered and rustic look that is inviting.
The restaurant is at the ground level with a small, well-stocked stock cellar kept at a constant temperature.
Pretty steep steps lead up to a living room-style upper loft with cozy, comfortable, sink-in couches, perfect for a bit of tête-à-tête or a private party!
If you prefer privacy, this upper section has small tables for private dining.
Georgetown Wines Cellar
The writer was told that a specific rich and famous Malaysian drinks this label, high-quality stuff.
Yup, we peeked at the tag. It is the HIGH end!
What does a fish know about wine anyway?
Not to worry. Mr. Chung is an experienced sommelier who will learn your preferences and recommend the most suitable bottle for your evening.
He could recommend brandies and cognacs if you prefer something smooth and lingering.
Georgetown Wines Dining Area – The Long Table
We prefer to hang out at the extended bench-style seating, which is a terrific way to mingle casually with the other diners.
Georgetown Wines – Chef Aldrien Moh
Penang boy Chef Aldrien Moh is passionate about cooking good rather than fancy food.
Trained and skilled under Michelin star chefs’ hats in Melbourne, Aldrien is now backing on home ground to cook with simplicity and originality!
The menu is surprisingly delightful and is more than sufficient for wine pairings.
We ordered several appetizers and mains. We started with a salad to pretend we were eating healthily!
