Restoran Sun Yeong Wai is a beloved Ipoh roast meat restaurant on Jalan Mustapha al-Bakri.
It’s located just opposite the famous Sin Eng Heong Baked Kaya Puff shop.
Lily, an Ipohite, has been coming here for over twenty years, and it was easy to see why.

First Impressions
The moment I stepped into the restaurant, the fragrance of roasted meats hit me!
So appetizing!
I couldn’t wait to dig in.
Herbs and spices mingled perfectly, creating a warm, inviting aroma.
The café-style interior is casual and modern, featuring a large glass display at the front.
Hanging on metal hooks were the barbecued meats.
Roast duck, chicken, roasted pork (“Siew Yoke”), and barbecued pork (“Char Siew”) ready to be served.

How to Order Roast Duck and Pork
We started with a platter of roast duck and barbecued caramelized pork.
Both pork cuts were sliced about half an inch thick—perfect bite-size for rice.
I personally love slightly larger cubes of roasted pork belly for the juicy layers of melting fat!
Here they were fragrant and delicious.
“This is where locals come for their favorite lunch of crunchy Siew Yoke and sweet Char Siew,” Lily explained.
She also recommended the Roast Duck, noting its crispy skin and juicy meat.
I couldn’t agree more.
Signature Dishes
Roast Duck, Siew Yoke, and Char Siew
The highlight, of course, was the signature Restoran Sun Yeong Wai Roast Duck Leg.
The skin was crisp, the meat tender and juicy, and the herb-infused aroma was irresistible.
The roast pork was equally impressive.
Both Siew Yoke and Char Siew come from pork belly, ensuring a juicy, flavorful bite.
The Siew Yoke’s crunchy skin comes from a traditional charcoal furnace.
While the Char Siew glistens with a maltose glaze and offers a perfectly sweet finish.
Juicy, fragrant rice complemented every dish, making the meal truly satisfying.
We shared three large bowls of rice, and I was tempted to have seconds.
Next time, two bowls are definitely on my list.
How Restoran Sun Yeong Wai Became Famous
The founder, Danny’s father, is the patriarch of Sun Yeong Wai Restaurants.
From 1980 to 1990, he traveled to Hong Kong every year to refine his roast duck techniques and enhance his culinary skills.
In the 1990s, the business was passed from father to son, and Danny now runs the family restaurant with the same dedication.
The modern café-style interior is clean and welcoming, blending tradition with a casual dining experience.
Even during festive seasons, the restaurant surprises diners with special offerings, including Christmas Roast Turkey.
Their signature roast meats are always juicy, tender, and topped with fresh cilantro, making each dish as fragrant as it is flavorful.
