David Brown Restaurant is the highest restaurant in Penang Hill.
The beautiful restaurant is the refurbished cottage on Strawberry Hill that once belonged to David Brown.
David Brown Restaurant: Penang Hill’s Highest Dining Spot with Spectacular Views
David Brown Restaurant offers one of the most spectacular views of George Town at dusk.
As the day winds down, the city turns into a twinkling fairytale town before your eyes.
History of David Brown Restaurant
The original house of Penang’s pioneer nutmeg planter, David Brown, was rebuilt in the 19th century after it burned down.
Later, it was refurbished and rebranded as a quintessential British colonial Restaurant and Tea Terrace.
Spend a day up Penang’s iconic Penang Hill for a romantic gateway.
Take the funicular train up on a weekday when the pace is slower.
David Brown Restaurant – Colonial British Food
We ordered a refreshing DB Fruit Punch, a combination of orange, apple, mango, cranberry juice, and grenadine syrup.
As a sweet thirst quencher, that refreshes after walking around the hilltop.
What to Order at David Brown Restaurant?
With a beautiful garden setting like this, everything looks and tastes delicious!
Soup Starters
For starters, we opt to skip appetizers to save room for desserts.
That plan was perfect as the portions are not only large but delicious!
We tried two excellent full-bodied soups, cooked in chicken broth and cream.
The cooler climate makes one hungrier than usual. Maybe I was just greedy and finished all my mains.
I couldn’t decide which I liked best.
The Wild Mushroom Soup is made with fresh wild mushrooms.
The Chicken and Corn Chowder with chunky chicken and fresh sweet corn kernels.
Aha…. decisions decisions decisions
Beef Wellington
David Brown Restaurant’s Star Dish is Beef Wellington
Beef Wellington is my favorite main. – the perfect main course to look forward to for Christmas Day lunch. A tender cut of beef is a little luxury.
It comes from the most expensive meat cut and has no muscle, making it tender and delicious.
If you haven’t had it before, it will surprise you.
The chef starts by pan, searing the fillet steak on a hot pan, and then coating it with English mustard.
Next, he wraps the beef with a bed of bacon coated with chicken pate.
The final wrap is a homemade puff pastry before its oven-baked.
The roasted beef fillet is delicious succulent.
The nice pastry is crispy on the outside. Pate and bacon smell divine and Christmassy.
Perfect.
Bit of luxury, the Beef Wellington reminds me so much of Christmas!
The Classic BBQ Chicken Chop
The Classic BBQ Chicken Chop has a lovely piquant tasty marinate and is served with a BBQ sauce.
The chicken is just cooked and keeps its juicy flavor, with a nicely barbequed taste.
I rather like the crinkle-cut potatoes for their crispy crunch, and the best part is that the potatoes are still soft and flavorful.
We Ordered Two Desserts!
Women Have a Second Stomach for Desserts
For desserts, we had two cakes.
The Pandan Chiffon Cake is light green because of the chlorophyll in the pandan juice.
Delicious with local kaya and a butterscotch ice cream.
That and a hot cup of cappuccino was the highlight of my Penang Hill trip.
I can’t wait to return to dine at David Brown’s Restaurant & Tea Terraces.
I hear that they have a great high tea set.
If there are hot, freshly made scones and mini pies, I’ll be making a beeline there soon!
Pandan Chiffon Cake
The Pandan Chiffon Cake is a light, fluffy sponge cake with pandan (screw pine) leaves.
My absolute favorite is the Chocolate Torte.
This decadent chocolate cake is made with ground almonds instead of flour and glazed with chocolate ganache—it’s a cake to die for.
David Brown Restaurant Review (updated)
David Brown Restaurant at Strawberry Hill is a lovely place with great views of George Town and delicious British food.
We had the set lunch and wished there was room in our tummy for afternoon tea.
The price is reasonable as everything had to be transported up Penang Hill.
The food is very tasty food especially the show-stopping Beef Wellington made with beef tenderloin.
Recommended for quality food and service.
