EC Canteen Noordin Street: The Glassy Char Siew Verdict

Up close and irresistible: the famous Glassy Char Siew at EC Canteen Noordin if you’re looking for affordable roast meat in Penang.

One photo of the “Glassy Char Siew” at EC Canteen Noordin on social media was all it took to have us salivating.

In a sea of filtered, “aesthetic” lies, this BBQ pork looked like the real deal.

Last Sunday, fresh from church, the “Aunty Brigade”—Aunty Queenie, Aunty Sharon, and Aunty Dory made their way to hunt down this popular George Town roast meat spot.

We were excited to find out where to eat roast meat in George Town.

Finding EC Canteen was a breeze via Google Maps, and the moment we stepped in, the staff welcomed us warmly.

Aunty Queenie had been dreaming of that elusive Hong Kong–style Char Siew roast meat perfection ever since seeing the photo.

EC Canteen, only two years old, is still a newcomer to the George Town roast meat scene.

By the time we arrived, the restaurant was already 90% full with families.

The secret is out. Come early for dinner if you want the best items, or risk finding them sold out.

EC Canteen Ambience

The real MVP here is the air conditioning. Stepping outside in George Town can feel like being steamed in a dim sum basket, so a fully air-conditioned dining space is a blessing.

Free Sunday roadside parking is a plus, and for weekday lunch, there’s a private car park nearby.

Ordering is simple via a QR code from a compact menu featuring roast meats, rice, and noodles.

Even when busy, the system works smoothly, and our food arrived quickly.

Roasted Meats

On our first visit, we shared three dishes:

Glassy char siew on rice at EC Canteen Noordin, golden caramelized glaze

The star of EC Canteen Noordin: melt-in-your-mouth Glassy Char Siew Rice.

Char Siew Rice (RM11) – The star of the show. This “Glassy Char Siew” melts in your mouth with every bite. Aunty Queenie immediately nodded in approval.

Siew Yoke Rice (RM12) – The crackling was perfectly crisp. My only wish was for KL-style siew yoke cut into 1-inch cubes—the thin slices don’t give that glorious, juicy bite.

Oily Rice – Savory, slightly indulgent with a hint of pork lard. Heart-healthy? Maybe not. Delicious? Absolutely.

Siew Yoke Rice with perfect crackling alongside the delicate Fresh Barramundi Milky Noodles.

Fresh Barramundi Milky Noodles 鲜鱼肉白汤面 (RM16.90) – Thinly sliced fish, extremely fresh, with a mild, milky broth. Slightly spicier or tangier would be nice, and a larger sharing portion could make it even better.

Drinks

EC Canteen keeps hot and cold drinks at the same price, and none are watered down—though some might need a top-up of hot water.

Classic drinks at EC Canteen Noordin: comforting Yuen Yeung Milk Tea and refreshing Honey Lemon Tea.

Honey Lemon Tea (RM5.90)

Refreshing with just the right balance of sweet and tang.

Signature Yuen Yeung Milk Tea (RM6.90)

Smooth, rich, and comforting.

The Verdict

EC Canteen isn’t chasing Michelin stars, but it delivers on what matters most: taste, quality, and a welcoming experience.

We were still finishing our last bites while planning our next visit.

If that’s not the highest form of a Penang food review, what is?
