A bamboo briyani Ladies Lunch with a new twist!

I first spotted the Tuk Tuk Biryani promotion on Facebook and couldn’t resist the twinge of curiosity.

A biryani served in a bamboo container?

That was intriguing enough to rope in my partners in crime for a ladies lunch adventure at Penang Kitchen.

Courtyard by Marriott Penang Executive Chef Ahmad Zaim Abdullah, better known as Chef Zaim, warmly welcomed us.

He is friendly and amiable, and has led several special dining promotions and culinary collaborations.

Chef Zaim energy and anecdotes about creating the Tuk Tuk Biryani made the experience even more enjoyable.

First Impressions of Bamboo Briyani

When the bamboo briyani arrived, it immediately brought a smile to the table.

Chef Zaim personally removed the puff pastry cover and lightly tapped the bamboo with a spoon.

The melodic “Tuk Tuk” sound was playful rhythm and instantly set a fun mood.

He even posed for photos and shared stories behind the creation of this unique dish.

The aroma hit us before the first bite.

The moment felt like unveiling a secret, and the anticipation made the first mouthful even more satisfying.

The Bamboo Briyani Difference

The rice revealed why bamboo briyani is special.

Each grain was moist, tender, and had a subtle chewiness that made every bite feel thoughtful.

We tried both chicken and beef.

The chicken was tender, juicy, and stole the show while the beef was slightly chewier but still satisfying.

Portions were generous, with six pieces of chicken and a hearty serving of beef, making it filling and good value for RM25 nett.

Bamboo Briyani Accompaniments

The sides were just as memorable as the bamboo briyani itself.

Two large, crisp papadams, cooling raita, and fragrant dhal curry balanced the flavors beautifully.

Unexpected delight – candied banana peel adds a playful, sustainable twist to the meal

The real surprise was the candied banana peel coated in sugar. At first, it sounded unusual, even a little daring, but the sweet, slightly chewy treat was genuinely delightful.

Chef Zaim explained that he wanted diners to enjoy organic, sustainable ingredients.

The banana peel is packed with nutrients including vitamins B6 and B12, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and antioxidants.

It’s a clever way to show that sustainability can be tasty, playful, and nourishing at the same time.

We joked that next time it would be fun to try a salty and smoky version of the banana peel.

That twist could be the perfect balance of bold and healthy.

Memorable Tuk Tuk Sounds

This bamboo briyani is fragrant and flavorful without overwhelming spice.

It is milder than some street versions but still packed with taste, making it approachable for anyone new to biryani.

Each spoonful encourages you to slow down and savor the textures, the aroma, and the careful balance of flavors.
