Utoo Boho Cafe & Patisserie Review

Steph from Ipoh always has a list of cafés to visit whenever she’s in Penang, and this time to Utoo Boho Café.

I remember when it first opened in 2022.

I walked in one evening with Wendy, and it was so packed.

Every other time I dropped by, it was full again.

Maybe I saw some photos on social media – I don’t know why I thought it was a floor-sitting, camping-style café.

It’s been years since I sat cross-legged on the floor to manage to get up without help.

So, I was reluctant when Steph suggested visiting.

Plus, they don’t accept reservations!

We managed to find a parking spot in the lot next to the café.

Victoria Street

I recall that Victoria Street was filled with warehouses, office blocks, and storage spaces in the 1980s.

A schoolmate ran a delicious Italian restaurant.

I believe it was called Cucina.

The chef was a German man, and I remember asking why it was an Italian restaurant.

Back in the 1990s, Italian restaurants were so rare.

I first tasted Italian food at the Cucina, which was ahead of its time.

With the repeal of the Control of Rent (Repeal) Act 1997, the area flourished.

Local businesses started leasing old shops and offices to convert them to cafes.

After an eventful lunch at D’Skara, we visited the café for desserts and coffee.

What do you eat after a fine meal of Indian curries, rice, and triple-portioned naan bread?

We were all game for some uncle-and-aunty café hopping and were excited!

As usual, I rushed ahead to request a table suitable for seniors cheerfully.

Honestly, the thought of sitting on the floor and struggling to get up again was a bit daunting.

I walked through the teepee-like bamboo archway,

It brought back memories of Boy Scout and Girl Guide camping days and the now-defunct Coronation Camp before the Botanical Gardens

If you know, you know.

Utoo Boho Café & Patisserie

From the outside, Utoo Boho Café & Patisserie looks quite ordinary.

It was reminiscent of an old office building I used to visit.

If I’m not mistaken, the business was as an importer of tea leaves.

However, the café exudes an extraordinary, unconventional vibe once you step inside.

It has a Bohemian-style interior.

The Boho space offers a delightful escape with its unique ambiance.

Once again, Aunty and Uncle approve.

The space is drenched in natural light, adorned with macrame pillows, and exudes a chill vibe.

It’s charming, I remember announcing.

The aunties like it, then zone out to ‘How do they deep clean the premises?’

It’s brave to keep everything in a neutral shade and use whites and beige.

After we eyeballed the place and made Aunty’s comments, we started to relax.

The chill vibes seep from every corner, making everyone feel relaxed and at ease.

With its boho-chic vibes, this eclectic and whimsical café offers a playful touch to the atmosphere.

There’s picnic-style dining experience with floor seating and even a teepee tent!

At Utoo Boho Cafe, table seating offers comfort, while younger guests love the casual picnic-style setup.

A counter with pastries, croissants, and madeleines tempts you from the moment you enter.

I read that The croissants are buttery and flaky.

I have my favorite café and remain loyal to my two monthly visits there.

Other pastries and madeleines showcase artistic flair and boast indulgent flavors.

Utoo Boho Café Menu

There is a pretty extensive dessert menu.

Where where? I asked.

“It’s digital, Dory,” said Steph.

Steph prattled on and read some items for us since we were lazy.

And two, we needed help to read the small print.

We gamely left the ordering to her.

Given my penchant for chocolate, I would have ordered something chocolatey as usual.

Steph decided to order the Panna Cotta, which was decadently decorated.

Panna Cotta (RM25)

The Panna Cotta was served with a passion fruit sauce.

There’s honey coated granola, Greek yogurt, rose flakes, mixed nuts, edible flowers & tropical fruits

It  was super jiggly and, topped with a vibrant mix of fresh ingredients, bursts with flavor.

Its creamy texture and balanced sweetness make it a must-try.

“It has to look good in pictures. she said.

“True.”

We all nodded in agreement.

We enjoyed the Panna Cotta with a colorful mix of toppings.

She also ordered a beautifully painted little cake for RM35—it had nutmeg inside.

Part of the Floret Essence petite gateaux collection, we chose the one filled with nutmeg.

This foursome of exquisite confections is adorned with hand-painted floral designs and abstract accents.

Each petite gateau is a testament to artistry and passion, featuring delicate pastel flowers in edible colors.

We all took turns photographing the little cake, admiring its visual and culinary beauty.

It felt almost too precious to cut and eat.

The little cakes are made with creative culinary craftsmanship and are particularly impressive.

It was crafted to perfection.

A masterpiece for any occasion, capturing elegance and beauty in every bite.

The café also offers a range of artisanal coffees and teas, perfect to pair with your choice of desserts.

I heard later that their latte art is as impressive as their brew.

For those who ordered Americano with milk on the side, we didn’t get to experience the latte art.

A cup of coffee alongside a delicious affogato, featuring a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso.

Savor the perfect pairing of rich coffee and creamy affogato for a delightful treat.

There’s also a selection of loose-leaf teas that provide a refreshing alternative for those seeking something lighter.

The cafe is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a haven for those who appreciate a blend of aesthetic charm.

The café is perfect for a leisurely brunch or a sweet treat after a meal.

It promises an experience that delights both the eyes and the palate.
