If you love dipping your French fries into your chocolate sundae, the Espresso Chicken is as original and quirky as fusion comes alive.

My first visit was in 2016 when they opened as the first bicycle theme café.

Over the years, I’ve been to the café for many meals with friends.

Sometimes when someone develops a craving for the Espresso Chicken.

Wheelers Cafe is one of the longest operating cafes in Love Lane, a street favored by tourists.

Locals love their western breakfast as the café opens at 8.00 AM daily.

The café’s concept started with a relaxing bicycle art in mind.

In 2018 The fresh new look after renovation provided a comfy environment.

There are two dining areas, on the Ground and the First Floor.

Initially, you could use the spiral staircase at the front, and now, you can use a proper staircase just after the kitchen.

The first floor is now for reservations only.

The café has a complete set of meals, snacks, and drinks menus.

You get to scan on your phone to order your meal.

Some friends like the Bacon Arugula pizza.

Others liked the Spaghetti Carbonara.

Wheeler’s Cafe serves an authentic brunch that both locals and tourists love.

Think Yogurt Bowls, Banana Pancakes, Wraps, Sandwiches, and that Big Breakfast with the works!

There are enough vegetarian options to keep non-meat eaters happy.

What I ordered

As for me, I was more interested in the vegetarian options on the menu than realized that I needed more protein instead of greens.

So I decided to order a chicken sandwich for lunch/brunch.

The toasted sourdough arrived cold and not toasty as expected.

I sounded it to the crew, and they asked if I wanted them to reheat it or make me a new sandwich (which takes another 10mins).

The new sandwich arrived warm and beautifully toasty, and I had three people ask if everything was fine!

For as long as I can remember, Wheelers Café has been spot on with attentive service with a smile.

The girls all wear masks and keep to SOP, but you can tell they smile.

For this alone, if you’re undecided on where to go hang out, Wheelers Café’s coffee is the perfect finish to a hearty weekday and weekend brunch out in George Town.

Espresso Chicken & Other (11.30 AM Onwards)

True fans love and order the most popular item, the Espresso Chicken at Wheelers Cafe.

It’s their thing. My friends seemed to like the taste of grilled chicken smothered with a creamy bittersweet espresso sauce.

For me, my memory of Coffee Chicken is strong, and it blocks out all other versions of the dish.

Years ago, I used to eat Chinese Coffee Chicken from a Chu Cha restaurant (defunct) at the Green Lane Heights apartment.

The version is bite-sized Chicken pieces that visually look like Marmite Chicken but have the robust sweet coffee taste (Nescafe)

Wheelers Cafe’s version is more refined, but it is not a dish I would go there specially to eat.

Wheelers Cafe Dessert

Dessert-wise, you can explore the options available from pancakes, burnt cheesecake, creme brulee, panna cotta, etc.

Whatever you decide, it’s pretty good.

It is easier to go in a group and let others do the ordering and share the desserts!

I tell myself I’m supposed to be on a calorie deficit diet. Every time I look at desserts and remember DIET.

The café is trendy, and there is always a line of people waiting to get in.

Mornings are busy for the breakfast/brunch crowds. A little later, the lunch crowds troop in.

Wheeler’s is good for quality coffee and food with great vegetarian options in that area.

Other coffee places around the corner come readily to mind.

The Alley for coffees and Mugshot for their pastries.

In the evening, Love Lane bars light up for partying. Holy Guacamole, The Loft – Love Lane, and Micke’s Place lights up the night with drinks and live music.
