Craving The Best Chicken Rice In Penang?
This list will save you serious time.
No squawks, just honest love for chicken rice.
I’m a once-a-week chicken rice junkie.
Over the years, I’ve probably polished off more than 300 plates.
Yep, that’s a lot of chicken.
These five stalls?
They’re my lifelong favorites.
The ones I’ve been visiting since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.
I’m listing them in the order I discovered them as a kid. It’s like tracing my own personal chicken rice timeline.
Back then, I was all about the “black” roasted chicken with that crispy skin you just couldn’t stop biting into.
Did you know that “Roasted” chicken at our local chicken rice stalls isn’t actually roasted in an oven at all?
To get that iconic golden-brown skin, the whole chicken is marinated in a sweet-and-savory blend of dark soy sauce, five-spice powder, and maltose. It is then deep-fried whole in a huge vat of hot oil.
This cooking method beautifully caramelizes the skin, creating the rich color and flavor we love. Calling it “Roast” (Or Kay) is simply our local way of distinguishing it from the white
“Pek Kay” poached version.
Later on, I fell for that “white” poached version, which is silky, tender, and completely addictive.
Read until the end to find out which stall.
These places serve chicken rice so good, you won’t even need to drown it in chili sauce. Penang’s got a plate waiting with your name on it.
Most of these stalls are old-school. You’ll see familiar faces who’ve been coming for decades.
One time, I chatted with a grandfather who’s been bringing his grandkids for three generations, just like my family.
The vibe? Vintage Penang kopitiam.
And the flavors? Still true to their roots.
No gimmicks. No frills. Just pure chicken rice magic, every single time.
Here’s the List of The Best Chicken Rice In Penang according to Smartdory.

It sits proudly under the MICHELIN Selected category, which is just international food-critic speak for a place that serves up consistently excellent cooking day in and day out.
But honestly? Long before the fancy inspectors came to town, the locals already knew.
My father and grandfathers favoruite spot. I remember mom telling me of their chicken rice dates here.
And later after I was old enough I got to join them.
Goh Thew Chik is the exact spot where the uncle and aunties behind the counter have watched me grow up since I was a little kid.
Confession: Even during high school my Friday treat was chicken rice in my high school uniform before taking the public bus home.
Till today, I still find myself sliding onto their plastic chairs at least once a month with my gym bro friends.
Ask any George Town local for a plate of authentic traditional Hainanese chicken rice, and most will point you to Gu Gan Tang (牛干冬) Chulia Street.
The Chicken
You can opt for the glossy, skin-on poached version or the roasted variety. Either way, the meat remains remarkably succulent and juicy right down to the bone.

Every grain is beautifully pearled, thoroughly coated in rich chicken fat, and highly aromatic without leaving a greasy sheen on your plate.
The Secret Sauce
Their legendary garlicky chili sauce balances sharp acidity with a solid chili kick, perfectly designed to cut through the richness of the meat.

Wen Chang Hainan Chicken Rice is a beloved institution serving locals and savvy travelers. With zero flashy signage, this humble, unpretentious spot serves up tender poached chicken, fragrant rice, and a signature zesty chili. Its location near People’s Court makes it central to good Chinese food in Penang.
This quiet sanctuary on Lebuh Cintra that I have frequented since my twenties. This is my mom’s favorite stall. She and the matriarch were friends in the wet market. It is the epitome of a generational kopitiam feeding local families with honest, completely un-commercialized food.
The Chicken
Their poached chicken is clean-tasting, exceptionally soft, and delicately seasoned to let the natural quality of the poultry shine through.
The Rice
Their rice is highly fragrant and beautifully textured, crafted perfectly to complement the delicate flavors of the old-school poached chicken.
The Secret Sauce
You must specifically ask for their ginger-scallion dip. It is incredibly sharp, aromatic, and deeply addictive when layered over the savory rice.
Travel Tips
Unlike bare-bones stalls, they offer brilliant traditional sides like chicken lor bak (five-spice chicken rolls), braised eggs, and braised tofu. This turn a simple lunch into a comforting feast. Do not miss their traditional Hainanese Kopi-Peng (Iced Coffee) to complete the meal!
The generational favorite. Don’t forget to ask for the secret weapon: that sharp, addictive ginger-scallion dip!
Sin Nam Huat Chicken Rice
The Early-Morning Charcoal Roast Heaven
- Address: No. 388, Wayton Court Apartment, Jalan Burma
- Operating Hours: 7:40 AM–4:00 PM Daily
- Price Range: Moderate
If you believe chicken rice belongs on the breakfast table, Sin Nam Huat opens its doors at 7:40 AM.
By 8:00 AM, I have met Penang families with kids in pajamas and workers chugging back duck rice. There is this population in Penang who just loves rice for every meal!
I remember my friend Bee took me to their original outlet in Paya Terubong in the 1990s. When Mr. Tan opened his outlet here, I have been a loyal fan ever since.
Every year I get a roast chicken for Chinese New Year dinner. It has been an annual tradition meeting other customers for their takeaways.
This branch stands out because it acts as a full-fledged roast meat house.
Their aromatic sio bak (roast pork), char siew, roast duck, and roast chicken on top of the poached chicken are hits with the customers, especially Indonesian Chinese on medical holiday.
Sin Nam Huat Chicken
They master the art of the char. The roast chicken features thin, crispy skin with a faint hint of woodsmoke.
The Rice
The grains are robust, fluffy, and seasoned well enough to hold their own alongside the intense flavors of the roasted meats.
The Secret Sauce
This is hands down the best chili sauce I have tasted across Penang’s chicken rice stalls. It is highly addictive with just the right amount of tang.
Travel Tips
Order a bowl of Chai Boey (Spicy Mustard Greens Stew). Its intense, tangy, and sour broth is absolutely critical for cutting through the heavy fat of the roast meats.
Keep in mind that lunch queues here are massive but fast-moving. You can actually pre-order your whole roast meats in advance for major holidays.
Breakfast of champions! The perfect pairing of rich charcoal roasts and sour, tangy Chai Boey stew.

The magic behind this delightful dish comes from the skilled hands of Mr. Tan and his wife.
