Kenny Hills Bakers Penang – Was It Worth the Hype?

When I heard Kenny Hills Bakers was opening in Penang, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Friends in KL had been raving about it for months.
Then I saw the long lines under the hot sun — and hesitated.
Queenie and a few others said it was their go-to café in KL, so I figured the Penang branch would be just as busy. I decided to wait for the hype to calm down before visiting with Missy Lisa.

We’re glad we did.

It was worth the wait.

Kenny Hills Bakers Opposite E&O Hotel

The Penang Kenny Hills Bakers outlet is housed in a beautiful century-old mansion on Upper Penang Road, directly across from the iconic Eastern & Oriental Hotel.

The space is airy and elegant, featuring lofty ceilings, large windows, and plenty of natural light.

There’s even an upstairs dining area accessible via a staircase — perfect for those seeking a quieter spot.

But it is a little hard as the restaurant is packed during meal times.

If you’re wandering around George Town’s heritage core, this place is definitely worth a visit.

What Lisa and I Ordered

The menu was large and after a while I decided to let Lisa order.

If’s it was me, I will order the same item from most cafes.

We discussed several item and figured we will try the classic Big Breakfast, and it was fantastic.

The Big Breakfast (Beef Bacon)

RM 38
Beef bacon, hash brown and 2 sunny side up eggs with organic toast & salted butter, chicken sausage, tomatoes, sautéed mushroom and homemade baked beans.

We chose scrambled eggs which turned out looking moist curd.

The beef bacon was micely grilled and sausage was juisy.

Mushrooms nicely sauteed.

, and their signature house-made sourdough toast with salted butter — a must for me (I’m not a fan of unsalted butter).

Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well-presented.

With all the pastries lined up in the glass display, it was hard to choose, but I left the decision to Lisa.

Peach Strudel

RM18

Of course, we couldn’t resist trying the famous Peach Strudel, which lived up to the hype.

The flaky pastry, creamy custard, and sweet peaches made it one of the best pastries I’ve had in Penang in a long time.

Bakes, Breads & Italian-Inspired Dishes

What really sets Kenny Hills Bakers apart is their attention to bread and pastries.

The story goes that the original idea came from a traditional English bakery in the UK, and it shows.

You can pick up freshly baked loaves, baguettes, and focaccia, along with jams and spreads.

The menu leans Italian, with wood-fired pizzas, pasta dishes, and gourmet brunch options.

Some items I’m excited to try on my next visit include:

  • Duck-leg confit with waffles
  • Corned Beef Egg in a Hole
  • Goat’s Cheese, Tomato & Spinach Quiche

Final Thoughts: Would I Return?

Absolutely.

Although the outlet is still new and popular (expect a bit of a wait during peak hours), the food quality and service are on par with its KL outlets.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Since it was really popular, we ended up meeting a few friends and acquaintances who were out for their brunch.
