Juheng Tomyam: Butterworth Must Try Tomyam Mee

“Want to eat Juheng Tomyam?” Irene asked, her tone laced with temptation.

“But we’ll need to drive to Butterworth, where the seafood is fresher and the prices are at least 40% cheaper.”

With that enticing promise, we found ourselves crossing the Penang Bridge for a culinary adventure.

This time, it was all about Juheng Tomyam Mee, a Butterworth hotspot that locals can’t stop raving about.

Known for its affordable yet mouthwatering bowls, Restoran Juheng has been serving up its signature tomyam and clear soup porridge since 1999.

Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint!

Tucked away from the main road, Juheng Tomyam stall is the kind of place you might miss if you’re not looking for it—but trust me, it’s worth the hunt.

We arrived around 5:30 PM and were greeted by the sight of a growing queue!

Even though the stall had just begun its evening service, the folks in Butterworth love to have an early dinner.

Half the seating area in the Kopitiam was already full – a clear sign that we were in for something special.

This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience.

Juheng Fried Fish Fillet

As we stepped into the bustling eatery, the first thing that greeted us was the enticing aroma of frying fish.

Two massive woks sizzled away in full view.

Irene pointed to me and said, “See, they have a staff whose job is to keep frying, churning out golden fillets that are clearly the pride of the establishment.”

Seriously. No joke!

This isn’t just fried fish; it’s the star of the show.

Perfectly crispy and undeniably delicious, each piece is fried with passion and precision.

One bite, and you’ll understand why it’s drawing hordes of people—it’s not just an ingredient; it defines the meal.

The buzz of regulars filled the air, and it was clear they knew exactly what they were here for.

The tantalizing scent teased our taste buds as we watched the magic happen in real-time.

The crispy, golden fillets weren’t just food; they were an experience, setting the tone for the flavorful feast to come.

Yes, you read that right—Tomyam porridge and seafood porridge are on the menu, adding a unique twist to the experience!

Irene went all in with Tomyam noodles, loaded with fried fish, prawns, cuttlefish, and quail eggs!

It was a spicy, sour combo that had her slurping in pure delight.

I took a simpler route.

I chose clear soup bihun topped with crispy fried fish, a crispy tofu roll, and mustard greens.

The balance of freshness and crunch in every bite was absolutely satisfying.
