Discovering Ciao Gelato along Victoria Street was a delightful surprise and a journey to happiness.
Feeling Bella Amore?
We were all giggles, settling into Utoo Boho, a lively little spot, having what I like to call a “3 aunties and one uncle party.”
It was a fun crew, but John had one thing on his mind—durians.
Since we planned the trip, John has been craving kampung durians, constantly texting me to ask if Penang still had any in season.
John and I go way back to when he first landed in Penang.
I took him to Balik Pulau and introduced him to the local treasures: two tiny durians I bought for just RM1 each.
I told him they were the best in Penang, and he devoured them like pure gold.
This lovely man from Wigan has had a serious durian craving ever since.
Since fresh durians were out of season, I knew the next best thing—durian ice cream!
I raved about the Musang King ice cream at Courtyard by Marriott’s weekend buffet.
Hands down, it’s the best durian ice cream in Penang.
Sadly, it’s not always on the menu at Courtyard’s Penang Kitchen.
But John wasn’t giving up on his craving!
Yvonne, always helpful, went on a mission to find some ice cream for him.
Instead, she discovered Ciao Gelato, just across the road on Victoria Street.
We didn’t know it then, but this little spot would soon become our perfect sweet escape.
Ciao Gelato
Say “Ciao!” to delicious artisanal Italian gelato!
If you’ve ever been to Italy and fallen in love with their food and desserts, you’re in luck.
Penang has a small community of Italian F&B owners bringing authentic flavors to our doorstep.
Italian outlets like Bottega, Via Pre, and Otto Pizza come to mind.
For fine dining, there’s Kucina Penang Marriott.
Ciao Gelato is one such charming hotspot bursting with Italian flair!
For me, the shop was clean and neat—Aunty-and-Uncle approved!
Some may call it sterile, but it was a welcoming change after visiting so many hip and uber-stylish interiors that rely on cost-effective ambiance.
I’ve seen shops where weathered doors are transformed into tables, and vintage suitcases become charming side tables.
While the repurposing aesthetic offers undeniable style, I’ve always wondered if you can clean an uneven surface.
That’s why the appeal of Ciao Gelato to me was the stainless steel bowls in which the gelato was served.
Quality
The gelato here is made with high-quality milk, cream, and natural flavorings ingredients sourced locally and from Italy.
Each scoop offers a rich, velvety texture thanks to a slow-churning process that results in a smoother, creamier consistency.
The gelato is crafted with minimal sugar so that you can indulge with less guilt. The result? A decadent, refined taste.
Steph ordered two scoops—something chocolatey and a sorbet, I think. I sampled a bit, though I was still full from lunch and desserts!
