Historical George Town

George Town’s historic center showcases traditional multipurpose shophouses dating from the 18th to the 20th century.

Street after street is lined with these buildings in various styles, colors, and various states of disrepair.

Initially, the front of the ground floor served as a shop or restaurant.

The back housed workshops, storage, kitchens, and toilets.

They used the upper floors as living space.

Many shophouses still serve this purpose today, with some conserved, refurbished, and repurposed as cafes, restaurants, or boutique hotels.

If you’re visiting Penang, you will want to stay at these unique accommodations.

Savor the Flavors of Nyonya Chiak Restaurant

Baba Nyonya cuisine emerged from a rich cultural blend, resulting in delightful “Nyonya” dishes.

These home-cooked meals combine Malay spices with Chinese ingredients and techniques, creating tempting flavors.

Expect tangy, aromatic, and spicy dishes brimming with herbal goodness.

Each bite offers a unique and exciting flavor experience, reflecting the Peranakan twist on classic Malay recipes.

There were no Peranakan restaurants in the past, so each family developed its variations of recipes.

This means tastes vary, with some heirloom dishes being lighter and others more savory.

Nyonya recipes lack standardized measurements or exact instructions.

Most Nyonya rely instead on the ‘agak agak’ method—an intuitive approach to cooking.

When I used to help my mom, she would look at the ingredients and adjust them.

Often adding or subtracting as needed, estimating amounts and cooking times based on experience and taste.

Families with small children commonly serve a sweeter version of Braised Pork, Tau Ewe Bak.

For our food tasting, we ordered from the set menu and enjoyed the following six dishes:

  1. Pandan Fried Chicken – Crispy chicken infused with aromatic pandan flavor.
  2. Stir-fried Prawn Ramen – Ramen noodles stir-fried with succulent prawns and vegetables.
  3. Fried Lobak – Savory and crispy fried rolls with a flavorful filling.
  4. Chicken Satay – Grilled chicken skewers served with a rich peanut sauce.
  5. Oyster Omelette – Fluffy omelet with fresh oysters and a hint of spiciness.
  6. Jui Hu Char/Pai Tee – A flavorful mix of shredded ingredients served in crisp shell cups.

The culinary adventure continues with Baba Nyonya cuisine’s incredible desserts.

Picture colorful cakes (kueh or kue) and sweet, sticky treats like Ang Ku Kue, Nyonya Bak Chang, Kueh Kochi, Kueh Kapit, and Kueh Bangkit.

Each dessert is a piece of art designed to delight your taste buds.

We tried the desserts, including Ais Kacang and Cendol, all presented beautifully.

Review of Nyonya Chiak Restaurant

The owner created Nyonya Chiak Restaurant to honor the memory of his grandmother.

He also wants to share the beloved home-cooked dishes prepared by the family matriarch.

Each Nyonya family has its unique way of executing recipes.

Only some Nyonya restaurants will cater to those who prefer intensely spicy curries or Thai flavors.

The food here highlights fresh ingredients and generous portions and is prepared without MSG.

I found the taste to be simple, friendly, and flavorful.

For visitors and tourists, the food is adapted to suit a wide range of palates, ensuring it’s neither too spicy, salty, nor pungent.
