It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed indulging in authentic Thai cuisine.

If you love Thai food like me, you know it is a taste that has lingered in my memory.

Imagine my excitement when I learned that the renowned Thai chefs from Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town were in town.

If you’re looking for authentic Thai flavors, the chefs from Phuket offer an arsenal of spicy food profiles.

The Taste of Thai Buffet skillfully combines sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors.

It utilizes ingredients primarily sourced from Thailand to ensure authenticity.

Penang Kitchen’s Thai specialties include Thai cuisine classics like Tom Yum Goong, Kaeng Som, Som Tam, Pad Thai, and Mango Sticky Rice.

As I stepped into the venue, I could sense the anticipation.

Thai music played softly in the background.

Servers dressed in traditional Thai costumes added to the authentic atmosphere.

I spotted a rack of Thai costumes and noticed Ms. Cynthia Lowe elegantly dressed in a beautiful lace top and a long skirt made from traditional Thai fabric.

The culinary team, led by the talented Chef Worawit and Sous Chef Sakbodin Trisri.

The Thai chefs, meticulously crafted a menu showcasing the best Thai cuisine.

This was not just a buffet but a gastronomic journey curated by the finest chefs, expertly paired with international dishes.

Walking through the buffet, I was greeted by a feast for the senses.

The seafood on ice, featuring the freshest oysters and other delectable catches, was a sight to behold.

The seafood BBQ, with its perfectly grilled meats, satays, and accompanying sauces, was a treat for meat lovers.

Taste of Thai Buffet Specialties

The star of the buffet was undoubtedly the selection of Thai specialties.

Som Tam

Among them, Som Tam stood out the most, drawing me in with the familiar and comforting sound of “Koong koong koong!”—the rhythmic pounding of a mortar and pestle.

This sound transported me back to bustling Thai markets.

Nothing beats watching street vendors prepare the famous green papaya salad.

The “Koong koong koong!” heightened my anticipation.

The Som Tam was a delightful fusion of spicy, sour, and sweet flavors, a testament to the chefs’ commitment to authenticity.

I was reminded of the first time I traveled to Thailand and fell in love with this dish.

The flavor, the taste, and the method of mixing and slightly pounding the ingredients were unforgettable.

Firm green papaya is crucial for this salad.

I loved watching the chefs mix all the ingredients with a mortar and pestle.

Hearing the “Koong koong koong!” sound again, I was excited to taste the dish. It was a revelation—spicy, refreshing, and perfectly balanced.

Bruising thin papaya strips with garlic, chilies, palm sugar, lime, and fish sauce was fascinating and enjoyable.

The experience offered a great chance to learn an authentic Thai recipe and savor a spicy yet refreshing salad.

The first time I learned to make Som Tam, I was captivated by how the ingredients were mixed and slightly pounded.

I discovered this method is an authentic way of preparing a spicy Thai papaya salad.

The sounds and flavors brought back cherished memories of my travels in Thailand, making this buffet experience truly special.

Tom Yum Goong

If you love spicy, hot, and sour prawn soup that bursts with flavor – Tom Yum Goong is exactly what you need.

Tom Yum Goon is a classic must-order Thai soup made solely with fresh, succulent prawns.

It combines the perfect balance of spicy, sour, and savory elements.

The broth is infused with fragrant herbs like lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal, while the addition of chili peppers adds a fiery kick.

The prawns are tender and juicy, absorbing the rich flavors of the broth.

The final touch of lime juice and fresh cilantro.

It enhances the soup’s vibrant and refreshing taste.

Tom Yum Goong is a truly invigorating culinary experience.

Kaeng Som

Unlike Tom Yum, Kaeng Som, a Thai sour curry, was an unforgettable experience for me.

The popular dish is a sour and spicy fish curry or soup with vegetables, beloved in Thai cuisine.

The first thing that hit me was its distinct sour taste, which comes from tamarind.

This sourness is perfectly balanced by a touch of sweetness from palm sugar.

Despite its name, which translates to “sour curry,” the predominant flavor that stood out was the intense spiciness of red chillis.

The sour curry paste used in Kaeng Som blends red chillis, shallots, fish or shrimp paste, and tamarind juice.

It has a deep and complex flavor profile.

Initially, I tried drinking it as a soup but later found it too sour.

Later, I discovered that the best way to enjoy Kaeng Som is with steamed rice and an omelet.

Which perfectly complements the curry.

Pad Thai

I remember sitting by the roadside in Chiang Mai, ordering Pad Thai plates with Kelly.

Pad Thai means “fried,” with “pad” translating to “fried” and “Thai” meaning “dish.”

Pad Thai has become a beloved staple, from humble street vendors to fine dining establishments.

Combining rice noodles, tender shrimp or chicken, crunchy peanuts, bean sprouts for a perfect mouthfeel.

The tangy, slightly sweet sauce creates a comforting and exciting dish.

The sauce—made with fish sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and tamarind—is the heart and soul of this dish.

Tamarind gives Pad Thai its distinctive sour flavor, an essential element that defines its taste.

It’s no wonder that Pad Thai has become one of Thailand’s national dishes, celebrated for its unique and delightful flavor profile.

Mango Sticky Rice

The Mango Sticky Rice was the perfect sweet ending to my meal.

Penangites love the rich coconut-infused glutinous rice accompanied by juicy fresh mango slices.

I made it all more decadent and drizzled with coconut cream.

It is equally enjoyed with a spoon or hand and offers a delightful sensory experience.

The blend of flavors and textures makes it a comforting dessert.

Each spoonful contrasts the warm, creamy, sticky rice and the cool, juicy, fresh mango slices.

I can’t help but appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship behind creating such a harmonious dessert.

For desserts, the Nyonya kuih brought a local flair with its colorful and sweet treats.

We loved the delightful cakes crafted by the hotel’s pastry team.

One of the highlights of dining at Penang Kitchen’s buffet is their homemade ice cream.

My favorite is the Musang King flavor!

I often enjoy with two scoops topped with a slice of their fabulous layer cake.
