Best Hidden Beach Pantai Pasir Panjang Penang

Pantai Pasir Panjang (Long Sand Beach) is a hidden beach that lies quietly at the southern end of Balik Pulau, on the far side of Penang, that remains unknown to many Penangites, including me.

Batu Ferringhi usually steals the spotlight, followed by the tucked-away charms of Monkey Beach and Pantai Kerachut within the Penang National Park.

Pantai Acheh is infamous for its encounter with the 2006 tsunami.

Last weekend, my friends from Kuala Lumpur introduced me, a Penangite, to one of our island’s best-kept secrets – the hidden beaches tucked away from the bustling crowds.

While many flock to the famous Batu Ferringhi, known for its lively tourist attractions, it’s towards the island’s southern side where the true gems lie.

Here, secluded beaches offer tranquility amidst nature’s beauty.

One such hidden beach, known only to a few locals and adventurous travelers, is a paradise waiting to be discovered – Pasir Panjang Beach, Balik Pulau.

Embarking on a road trip to Balik Pulau, we unveiled Penang’s tranquil side, away from the usual tourist spots.

Our initial plan was to visit the sprawling paddy fields of Kampung Terang.

The plan was thwarted as the weather was too blisteringly hot, with temperatures in Penang reaching upwards of 93°F.

We got to view the container art installation on our way back, but it was too hot to stand in the middle of the paddy fields.

Instead, we went later in the day and drove along the famous Bukit Kukus elevated roadway, the highest road in Malaysia.

We followed signs towards ‘Pulau Betong,’ hoping to catch a mesmerizing sunset at Pantai Pasir Panjang.

On our way, we stopped by a roadside stall beneath a nutmeg tree before Kampung Terang.

We bought food for our picnic: a plastic box of blue Nasi Kerabu with fried chicken, Kerepok Lekor, Curry Puff, and takeaway plastic cups with plastic T-handles of F&N Orange.

As we peered out the car windows, our noses pressed against the glass, we saw an unkempt beach and a modest jetty with fishing boats.

In the valley was a Chinese fishing village known as Kampung Pulau Betong, a small fishing village located on the southwest coast of Penang.

Our journey led us past the Pulau Betong Fishing Village, complete with a bustling fish market frequented by locals.

The village derives its name from the nearby island, Pulau Betong.

Pressing on down the winding road, we were still determining our destination.

The anticipation grew with every turn as we drove through winding paths and lush greenery.

Eventually, we found ourselves navigating a narrow, twisting path flanked by parked cars, signaling our proximity to Pasir Panjang Beach at the southernmost tip of the island.

Further along, we encountered a dead end marked by the Kem Bina Negara Balik Pulau, a camp dedicated to government activities.

Right beside it lay Pantai Pasir Panjang.

Some local food stalls sell drinks and snacks.

Excitedly, we walked in, hauling bags filled with towels, mats, and food.

Nearby stalls tempted us with coffee, Lekor wedges topped with cheese, and fruits with rojak sauce in plastic cups.

We could have easily purchased snacks here if we had yet to bring such a heavy load.

Upon reaching the secluded shoreline, we saw a breathtaking sight – a pristine stretch of golden sand embraced by clear turquoise waters, bordered by towering cliffs and swaying palm trees.

The stretch of sandy shoreline welcomed us, dotted with local Malay families indulging in picnics and swimming.

The elevated beachfront of Pantai Pasir Panjang (Long Sand Beach)

While the beach was relatively short, as the sandy bank is elevated, it offered a cleaner alternative to its counterparts.

However, unlike those at Batu Ferringhi, the robust waves added a touch of danger.

Unfortunately, the sand lacked the softness of a typical beach, feeling relatively coarse underfoot.

Despite the absence of lifeguards, the beach buzzed with activity – children frolicking by the shore, families picnicking, and adults fishing.

Safety seemed to rely solely on the vigilance of visitors or those residing in Kem Bina Negara.

Families were having their picnic beneath shady trees.

As you venture further away from the picnickers near the beach entrance.

The only sounds that fill the air are the gentle lapping of waves against the shore and the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze.

Pantai Pasir Panjang is a sanctuary for those seeking solace and a much-needed escape from the maddening crowd.

Picnickers will find themselves in paradise as they spread their mats and baskets on the sand under the shade of palm trees.

Given the day was so warm, the few shaded spots were in high demand, and we quickly secured one vacated by a family.

With our tablecloth laid out and food packages arranged, we embraced the cool sea breeze.

It was the perfect ambiance for a leisurely picnic, with delicious local delicacies and refreshing drinks.

Whether it’s a romantic getaway for two or a fun-filled gathering with friends and family, this hidden beach offers the ideal setting for a memorable outdoor experience.

The serenity of this secluded beach starkly contrasts the bustling city life we left behind in George Town.

Despite being city girls initially, we lamented the absence of WiFi and our inability to surf the internet.

However, after sharing a laugh at each other’s expense, we settled into a quiet appreciation of the view, sinking our toes into the sand and feeling the stress melt away.

It was a gratifying experience to listen to the waves and the laughter of children wading in the shallow waters or building sandcastles along the shore.

As the day draws closer, the hidden beach transforms into a magical setting for witnessing one of nature’s most spectacular displays – the sunset.

The sky ignites with orange, pink, and gold hues, casting a warm glow over the tranquil waters.

In retrospect, Pantai Pasir Panjang remains a hidden gem, cherished by locals and unknown to many Penangites.

Its serene ambiance and breathtaking views offer a refreshing escape from bustling city life.

For those who dare to take a chance off the beaten path, Pantai Pasir Panjang promises an unforgettable experience in the tranquility of nature.

Ultimately, it’s not just the beauty of the hidden beach that leaves a lasting impression but the sense of serenity and tranquility that envelops those who visit.

Tucked away from the chaos of everyday life, this secluded paradise offers a precious opportunity to slow down, unwind, appreciate nature’s simple joys and good friends.
