Penang, November 18, 2023 – A momentous occasion unfolded as YB Lim Guan Eng, Former Chief Minister of Penang, State Assemblyman for Air Putih, and Member of Parliament for Bagan, unveiled the highly anticipated book, “Penang Hill Railway: 100 Years of Transformation (1923 – 2023).”
The book commemorates the centenary of the Penang Hill Railway and was written by Koay Su Lyn, a lawyer turned historical writer and research analyst in the History and Heritage Programme of Penang Institute.

A century after its informal opening on October 21, 1923, the Penang Hill Railway embarked on a year-long celebration titled “100 Years of Transformation.”
The book subtitled the same, unveils the funicular railway’s enduring historical significance, encapsulating pivotal events, challenges, projects, and milestones that have defined its remarkable journey through the past, present, and future.
In anticipation of its 100th anniversary on October 21, 2023, Penang Hill Corporation organized a series of events to pay tribute to this iconic landmark.
The railway, initially informally opened on October 21, 1923, before its official inauguration on January 1, 1924, has become an integral part of Penang’s rich history and heritage.
As Penang Hill commemorates its centennial, the celebration revolves around the railway and delves into the distinctive connection between the hill and its community, captivating residents and tourists alike.
The funicular train, a prominent attraction, has witnessed the hill’s transformative journey.
The public launch and discussion of the book, hosted by the Penang Hill Corporation, were graced by YB Lim Guan Eng, Penang State Assemblyman for Air Putih, and former Chief Minister of Penang. YB Lim Hui Ying, Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tanjong, was accompanied by distinguished guests at the event today, marking a historic moment to celebrate a century of the railway’s service.
Dr. Beh May Ting led a discussion with esteemed speakers Prof Dato’ Seri Anwar Fazal, Dato’ Cheok Lay Leng, Koay Su Lyn, and publisher David ST Loh, who shared their insights and perspectives, providing a multifaceted understanding of the railway’s historical importance.
