Da Shu Xia Seafood House Penang Best Dining 2023

Da Shu Xia Seafood House, also known as 海乾大树下海鲜饭店, has an intriguing history.

It had humble beginnings as a chu char restaurant located beneath a large, shady tree at Weld Quay.

Over time, this spot became renowned among the locals of Penang.

Those working in the Central Business District around Beach Street fondly called it the ‘Big Tree.’

During its early years, Da Shu Xia Seafood House was a popular and affordable lunch destination for office gatherings and casual meals.

From the 1990s until 2007, it was possible to enjoy a simple meal for two people at RM13 to RM15.

This typically included two servings of rice, two cups of hot Chinese tea, a small Fried Bawal (a type of fish), a vegetable dish, and an omelet.

On special occasions, some patrons would indulge in a variety of dishes.

I distinctly recall a farewell gathering where we splurged and ordered six dishes, which included the Fried Bawal, Too Kar (Pork Trotters), Spicy Clams, and an assortment of vegetables.

This was approximately 15 years ago, and the total bill totaled RM60.

Over the years, Da Shu Xia Seafood House has evolved and expanded its offerings while maintaining its reputation for serving delectable seafood.

Despite the changes, it is heartwarming to reminisce about its early days and the memories created around the dining table.

While its location has since changed – Da Shu Xia Seafood House has relocated to Victoria Street, at the intersection with Muntri Street, the quality and charm of the restaurant remain.

The establishment now boasts a modern corner building with an open-air and air-conditioned dining area.

Today it is a must-visit destination for locals and visitors who want an excellent Chinese restaurant meal after mural hunting and visiting the Clan Jetties.

Reconnecting with Old Friends

The last time I was here, right before the lockdown, Sam and I had a nice supper together.

Sitting down and eating a great lunch with each other was nostalgic.

Today, I had the joy of reconnecting with familiar faces, such as the Lady Boss and Chef, along with their Indonesian worker.

Seeing these friendly individuals again made Da Shu Xia Seafood House feel like a home away from home.

Their presence added an extra layer of warmth and familiarity to my dining experience.

The restaurant’s commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere is evident in the relationships they foster with their patrons.

It’s heartwarming to be welcomed by long-time acquaintances who have made Da Shu Xia Seafood House a welcoming and enjoyable location.

Da Shu Xia Seafood House Regulars

I had regularly patronized this restaurant since the 1990s when my office was in the CBD at Beach Street.

Our dining experiences have consistently been a highlight of our culinary journey.

Whether for office lunches, celebratory gatherings, or quick dinners, we have always left the restaurant satisfied with the dishes served.

As a long-time patron, I wholeheartedly recommend Da Shu Xia Seafood House for its consistently delicious food, reasonable prices, and lightning-fast service.

It truly shines as a gem in Penang’s culinary landscape.

Despite the challenges of hyperinflation, Da Shu Xia Seafood House manages to impress with its delectable seafood, which remains affordable.

In addition to their seafood offerings, they also provide an extensive range of non-seafood dishes to cater to diverse tastes.

Every dish served at Da Shu Xia Seafood House showcases the flavors and freshness that reflect the skill and expertise of their chef.

It’s a dining experience that continues to leave a lasting impression.

What to Order at Da Shu Xia Seafood House?

During a recent visit with Peggy and Marina, I shared stories of my past experiences at the restaurant, where I would order food during off-peak hours and bring it to my table.

The ladies were intrigued by this practice, but due to the restaurant’s popularity, we patiently waited for approximately 20 minutes before being served.

In the past, after placing your order, you would receive a complimentary cracker with hot curry sauce, a signature dish that is no longer served.

The ladies chose to order five meals (without rice) because there were just three of us, and it had been a nonstop eating day:

Sambal Belacan Kangkong: This water spinach dish with shrimp paste has a rich, creamy taste and is not spicy. It is fried with fresh succulent prawns.

Malabar Spinach Stir Fry: Known as “royal palace vegetable” (huang gong cai 皇宮菜) in Mandarin, this popular Chinese leafy green vegetable is stir-fried with garlic, lard oil and pork rind.

Blanched Octopus Tentacles: Getting the blanched octopus cooked right requires skill. Dipping the crunchy slices of tentacles in chili sauce creates a delightful combination.

Sweet Sour Clams: These fresh, zesty, and spicy clams have a nice kick that adds flavor.

Prawns in a Coconut Shell: Da Shu Xia Seafood House’s prawn dish is a true masterpiece. Perfectly cooked, the prawns are infused with the delightful essence of coconut water and are elegantly presented in a coconut shell. The coconut water enhances their natural sweetness and tenderness, making this dish 10/10.

Other recommended dishes at Da Shu Xia Seafood House.

Here are some recommendations for your meal.

Stuffed Yu Char Kway: You Tiao is a versatile snack that can be eaten in various ways, including on its own, stuffed with different ingredients, refried, and drizzled with mayonnaise.

Bread-wrapped Curry Prawns or Crabs: This amazing recipe combines milky and mild curry soup with copious amounts of seafood, including crabs and prawns.

Three-Taste Black Pomfret (三味黑昌): This dish features a unique non-spicy dark gravy topped with lard oil and pork rind.

Seasoned Salted Soft Shell Crab (咸蛋软壳蟹): These delicious and flavorful soft shell crabs are a delightful treat.

Braised Pork Knuckle: Da Shu Xia Seafood House’s ultimate bestseller, the pork knuckle, reigns supreme on their menu. It boasts a rich, dark appearance and generous amounts of succulent fat, offering a sinful allure. Once you taste its juicy and tender texture, you’ll be hooked.

However, the ladies refrained from ordering this indulgent delight due to our eternal pursuit of dietary restraint.

Da Shu Xia Seafood House’s unwavering commitment to quality and variety has made it a local favorite.

Whether you’re a seafood enthusiast or prefer other culinary delights, this restaurant’s diverse menu will surely exceed your expectations.

Drinks Menu

Da Shu Xia Seafood House provides a mixed drinks menu offering options such as apple lemon juice, Ice-blended series, Herbal drinks-in-a-jar, and fresh Coconut Water.

Whether you’re looking for a refreshing citrus beverage or a unique herbal concoction, they have something to quench your thirst.

Food Preparation and Presentation

Most meals are served lightning-fast, which is an intriguing restaurant feature.

This demonstrates how effective their service is. We saw that many ingredients were already pre-prepared, enabling the chef to rapidly stir-fry them before serving.

For instance, when the Sweet and Sour Chicken is pre-fried, it may look dry at first.

Not to worry, though; the sauce is offered separately. The meal transforms into a tasty and savory masterpiece after adding the sauce.

Rice Service

Rice is served in individual bowls, ensuring that each diner receives their portion to accompany their dishes.

This attention to detail adds to the overall Chinese restaurant dining experience.

Affordable Prices in a Heritage Location

Despite its prime location in the heritage site of George Town, Da Shu Xia Seafood House offers affordable prices.

This makes it an appealing option for locals and visitors who want to enjoy delicious cuisine without breaking the bank.

With its enticing drinks menu, efficient food preparation, individual rice servings, and reasonable prices, Da Shu Xia Seafood House provides a delightful dining experience in the heart of George Town’s heritage district.

Billing System

We ordered four dishes without rice during our visit, totaling RM121.

We don’t have the individual prices since Lady Boss verbally informed us of the total amount.

For first-time visitors, they are a few drawbacks to note. However, we will still be regulars.

Lady Boss goes around the tables to check the dishes and writes the final amount on the bills.

After you eat, she rechecks the bill (in case you’ve added items, rice, or drinks) and informs you of the total amount to be paid.

While the regulars are okay with the system, new diners would appreciate the lightning-fast service during peak hours.

The delicious food and reasonable prices would compensate for any shortcomings.
