“Hello, Emily Darling!”
I half expected co-owner Danny Yeong to say that in greeting as we stepped into the bold and richly colored interiors of the café.
Believe me.
Everything looks gorgeous together – from the fuchsia counter and Swoon Ludwig Chair in blue and yellow, and peacock green walls complement the color combination beneath a black ceiling.
At least, I thought those were the colors – it’s been years and years since I last held a color swatch to my name.
But the most beautiful color was that of the pastries and croissants.
The croissants were baked until they were well past golden brown.
The edges look pretty dark, and the tops have a rich brown color, which does two things – it gives the croissants more flavor, and it ensures they are done all the way through.
Emily Darling Interiors
We loved the interiors – robust and punchy.
The large Ming jars, gold frames, and lush greenery spell daring and vibrancy.
Emily Darling has the most pleasant cafe vibes in town.
We (Dory, Steph, and John) unanimously felt so welcome.
It’s as if we stepped into Danny and Marcus’ home for teatime treats instead of a cafe.
On top of all that, we couldn’t wait to devour the pastries.
EMILY Darling Cafe bakes lovely croissants and other delectable pastries and indulgent desserts.
EMILY has all their baked goods covered is a huge plus.
Some cafes and patisseries display their food exposed, which I find unhygienic.
Where is EMILY Darling?
For seniors, you would remember the old Boon Pharmacy at the corner of Penang Road and Jalan Dato Koyah.
After Boon Pharmacy vacated the shop lot, several other cafes took over with varying degrees of success.
EMILY Darling continues to operate at this location as a much-loved patisserie.
I would not mind dropping in time and again.
Why EMILY Darling Cafe?
If you want an honest opinion, here’s mine.
I’ve been to other cafes where their croissants were also supposed to be the talk of the town in Penang.
Many places are supposed to make good croissants with exciting toppings and fillings, etc.
What is most important is the cafe that you have fond memories of and want to revisit again and again.
I prefer a classic plain croissant made from flaky layers of buttery dough, baked to order every morning.
Period.
For my second trip, I wanted to try one of their signature items: puff pastry with a hollowed core and a yummeh vegetarian filling.
To make that a full meal, I decided to add on a salad, and the Darlings made me a pretty salad with Avocado slices, Oranges, and tomatoes on a bed of crisp Lettuce.
Best of all, it was a feast for the eyes! I loved the pretty edible flowers, too.
And the Quiche was delicious!
Conclusion
I’ve been recommending all my friends to go and can’t wait to make the next trip to try their high tea sets.
While many people want Instagram-worthy food shots, aunties like Dory want good service and real food that tastes as delicious as it looks!
Highly recommended.
