This was the first pit stop when Kak Izza took me on a whirlwind tour of Butterworth.
Sometimes, it sold out early.
We reached Butterworth a little after 11.30 AM to start our food hunt.
Dory was ready to eat her best meals in Seberang, with Kak Izza prepared to share all her favorite places.
I think these humble stalls, Kopitiam, should be in every traveler’s sight as they venture to the Mainland like me.
Maybe everyone else knows except me, which is unsurprising as I can sometimes be a bit of a blurry fish.

“COOK IN KELANTAN, EAT IN PENANG”
There are five types: Nasi Berluak Ayam (chicken), Nasi Kerabu (Blue Rice), Nasi Berluak Daging (Beef), Nasi Dagang, and the most popular dish – Nasi Berluak Ikan Tongkol (Mackerel).
The womenfolk start cooking the rice, and the side dishes begin at 5.30 PM.
The rice will be ready at 10 PM and packed before the van arrives at 10.30 PM every night for distribution via the East-West Highway in other states.
Along the way, the vans stop distributing supplies to traders waiting at the Banjaran Titiwangsa R&R Stop, Gerik, Baling, Kulim, Sungai Dua, and Permatang Pauh before ending at Juru.
In Nibong Tebal, the rice arrives as early as 5:30 AM at the Juru Rest and Rehabilitation (R&R) Stop, where operators gather for pick-ups.
If the ‘package’ did not reach their hands, the traders would not open stalls that day.
Penang is famous for Nasi Kandar, Pasembur, and Nasi Melayu.
East Coast-flavored dishes are a boon to those from Kelantan looking for a taste of home.
