Hudson’s Deli Great Sandwiches (Non-Halal)

Hudson’s Deli has great sandwiches. Period.

In 2019, I drop by the delicatessen at Tanjung Bungah for my first take.

Fast forward three years later, we’re here for lunch.

From the initial customer base of 50 -50 expatriates and locals, the Deli now has a higher percentage of locals from the positive word-of-mouth reviews.

The Deli is perhaps one of Penang’s most authentic and best-tasting sandwich shops with a steady stream of customers.

Christian and his wife, Pearl, the owners and operators, run the Deli with a helper.

The chef’s repertoire is expansive as he’s been an executive chef in various 5-star hotels worldwide.

Christian’s concept for the Deli is simple – hands-on controlled preparation.

Comfort food, simple but good quality ingredients.

Take a look at the Glass Chiller Showcase.

Everything served is 95% imported from Italy.

You will see the various ingredients, from Cheeses to the Salami and Bruschetta, which are not compromised when it comes to quality.

Hudson’s Deli Layout

The layout of Hudson’s Deli is pretty straightforward.

There are a few tables outside on the verandah.

Inside the Deli, the display counter and cashier are to the left.

There are some basic tables and chairs with a long table that seats eight comfortably to one side of the room.

The washroom (spotless and dry) is on the first floor.

Hudson’s Deli Menu

Hudson’s Deli spells happy feasting on various delicious cold cuts and exotic cheeses for meat lovers.

The menu features the items found at the Glass Chiller Showcase.

So you can expect some great Soups, Sandwiches, Meat, and Cheese Platters.

Most of the diners are regulars with solid support from the expat community.

We headed there on a Sunday in time for a leisure lunch with soup, overstuffed Sandwiches, a Meat Platter, and Cheese Platter.

Here’s what Steph, John, Sophia, Ian, and Dory ordered for lunch!

Rueben RM21

One of the places I’ve wanted to eat is Katz’s Delicatessen (c. 1888), a No-frills deli theatrically cranky Jewish restaurant in New York, NY.

Ever since I’ve seen Katz’s mile-high sandwiches, it has been my bucket wish item.

When I saw the Rueben on the menu at Hudson’s Deli, my instinct kicked in, and I had to order one, even though I wasn’t hungry!

I’ve always wanted to eat a Reuben Sandwich and couldn’t resist trying one here.

I didn’t say I wanted to wait until I was famished to eat one.

I’ve dreamt of an overly-stuffed sandwich with Beef Pastrami, Sauerkraut, and Swiss Cheese, over toasted Rye bread.

Some of the best things in life are simple, and this four-ingredient meal was as simple as it gets.

To put it mildly, it was an explosion of taste with an excellent mouthfeel – meaty beefy Pastrami, sweet and sourish Saurkraut, Swiss Cheese, and the homemade cocktail sauce were perfect.

Cocktail sauce?

You can instantly make that Cocktail Sauce as a dip for various snacks. It’s a simple combination of Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce, Lemon Juice, and Tabasco Sauce, and getting the ratio right is another matter.

Cheese Platter RM62

I finished the Blue cheese, a piece of semi-soft cheese with a sharp, salty flavor.

When I was about 5, it was the first cheese that my dad bought for me to try.

I remembered asking if the blue veins were dead worms!

Blue cheese is made with cultures of the edible mold Penicillium, giving it spots or blue veins.

Dad told me if I could eat Blue cheese, I would enjoy the other cheeses.

Blue cheese is pungent with a distinctive salty and sharp flavor, though it can sometimes be sweet. It is semi-soft, crumbly, and creamy in texture. Did I enjoy that? O course!

Hudson’s Deli Review:

You will taste the big difference if you’ve had franchised customized sandwiches (below RM15).

Spend the extra RM5 on your sandwich, your mouth will thank you as you bite into juicy meats.

The difference is in the best-imported ingredients.

The big plus point is that your sandwich is made by a head chef whose passion is to see his customers enjoy their meal.

I heard that the Burnt Cheesecake, baked by Pearl, has no flour – just cheese, eggs, and sugar.

When I get more eating companions, we will try this next trip.
