🍜 A Quick History of Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng

This isn’t just any mee goreng.

The stall began in 1941, and for decades it stood strong in a corner of Pulau Tikus at Bangkok Lane.

Now, Uncle and his son Mahboob Md Zakarih are still doing their thing—wok-frying those glorious noodles with skill, speed, and a whole lot of soul.

Uncle’s in his 70s but still remembers customers by face.

He even recognized me after years.

You don’t get that kind of connection in many places anymore.

🔥 What Makes Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng So Good?

There’s a reason people queue up.

This Mamak-style mee goreng is:

Spicy, sweet, eggy and slightly tangy

Packed with chewy sotong (cuttlefish), tofu, and potatoes

Fried to perfection with that signature orangey-red color

Some folks ask if it has wok hei.

Honestly?

No. And that’s okay.

Mee goreng isn’t about the char—it’s about the spicy-sweet tomatoey umami flavor that hits just right.

Mine was mildly spicy, just how I like it. But you can go extra pedas if you’re feeling brave.

🍽️ How to Order Mee Goreng (The Fun Way)

Don’t be shy. Here’s how it goes:

Walk up to the stall and make eye contact with Uncle.

Raise one finger if you want a plate.

He’ll say “chit pua” and chat with you in perfect Penang Hokkien.

You can say “kosong” if you want noodles only—no sotong or egg.

They’re fast, friendly, and fun.

Just like the food.

No Ais Kacang this time—we were full from croissants at Sin Seh Kai Cafe just before

Tried to order fried fritters (cucur udang) from the other stall, but it was closed.
