The Importance of Chinese New Year Eve

Family is the basis of Chinese society – All family members must make the journey home to eat the matriarch’s Chinese dishes.

Family Reunion Dinner is the most important event.

I remember vividly and always look forward to reunion meals with my family, relatives and cousins when we were children.

One of the decorations that intrigued me the most was the Upside-Down 福 (Fú) character that my grandparents paste on the wall every year. Fú which means “fortune” or “good luck”.

I love the atmosphere of gathering together at the big round table (the round table top placed on the table to extend it for all the traditional dishes and foods.

Nothing beats the enjoyment of those traditional homecooked meals with special dishes and foods only available during Chinese New Year cooked by my grandmother.

Even if they truly can’t, the rest of the family will leave their spot empty and place a spare set of utensils for them.

The significance placed on the New Year’s Eve dinner or the Family Reunion Dinners is a must to celebrate together every Chinese New Year to celebrate.

Some families will prepare and eat a steamboat, with an adult table and a kiddie table for all three generations to dine together.

The eve of the Chinese New Year is the Reunion Dinner when all family members get together to celebrate; it is considered the most important meal of the entire year.

In the past, many families got together to go to the market, shop, prepare and cook the foods for their Reunion Dinner together at home.

Nowadays, many Chinese families prefer to eat out to save the hassle of food prep and cleaning up.

Sometimes single friends will gather together to celebrate the reunion dinner rather than eating dinner alone.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many mothers reduce their trips to the wet market.

Many children working in other states or abroad could not return to their homes to visit parents and grandparents.

Crispy Roasted Chicken 黄金脆皮烧鸡

Restaurant chefs prep the roast chicken with salt and hang it to let it chill, uncovered, in the refrigerator to air-drying or dry-brining the bird – an easy technique that many cooks use to achieve a crispy-skinned bird.

To get that golden perfect roast chicken with crispy skin and succulent juicy meat, it is the technique that most of us can’t replicate in our small home kitchen.

I enjoyed this flavourful, appetizing and comforting Crispy Roasted Chicken – a classic dish loved by many.

The skin is crispy, the meat moist, and the slight tang from the sauce makes it perfect for eating hot rice.

Chinese New Year Food Symbolism:
Chicken symbolizes family togetherness.

One of the classic auspicious seafood recipes that Chinese like to eat, and a favourite Hotel Restaurant wedding dish and during reunion dinners.

The flavoursome dish has a lovely taste of an excellent braised seafood dish topped with Fat Choy (Sea Moss).

Wok-fried Prawn with Salted Egg Creamy Sauce 咸蛋奶油虾

The fresh Prawns are fried until crispy, then coated using a deliciously creamy, rich golden salted egg yolk sauce flavoured with curry leaves.

The taste of this dish is divine.

Oriental Seafood Fried Rice 原味海鲜饭

Rice is the symbol of nourishment, health, and life.

While fried Rice may appear to be the easiest to prepare, I assure you, the version made by restaurant chefs with the same ingredients taste so much better.

Homestyle fried rice uses day-old rice, whereas Restaurant fried rice uses freshly cooked rice cooked with slightly less water, making it less sticky.

Stir-fried on intense heat to create wok hei, that complex charred aroma that fleetingly cloaks and enhances the flavour of all the rice grains with Eggs, Surimi Crab Claws, Shrimp and mixed vegetables.

Chinese New Year Food Symbolism:

Rice symbolizes fertility, luck, wealth and, rice symbolizes a link between Heaven (Gods) and Earth (Men)

Osmanthus Fish & Flower Goji Berries Jelly 枸杞桂花糕

One of my favourite desserts is the lightly sweetened Osmanthus scented jelly studded with goji berries that glitter like gold.

It is a common dessert at dim sum, and having it in a koi fish-shaped mould makes it a Chinese New Year worthy dessert.

While the jelly with Osmanthus Flower and Goji Berries recipe is easy, the jelly’s unfolding is an art.

Chinese New Year Food Symbolism:

Osmanthus flower petals symbolize noble and precious.

Goji Berry symbolizes the longevity of life.

Fish symbolizes surplus and wealth.

End your meal with a sweet dessert that represents auspiciousness, friendship, and success.
