I stayed the night in MU Hotel Ipoh for the first time after years of countless eating day trips.
We used to drive into Ipoh, eat at our favorite shops, and head home after dinner with our prized shopping.
An Ipoh trip isn’t complete without a Pomelo Combo (Honey, Red Flesh, Yellow Flesh), Salt Baked Chicken, and traditional biscuits.
For this solo trip, I decided not to drive but to take the train.
Taking another route and going solo means I get to try new places to eat.
For my stay, I wanted a comfortable room, a simple breakfast, and friendly hotel staff who could point me where the locals eat.
Why did I choose MU Hotel Ipoh for a relaxing weekend getaway?
MU Hotel is in Ipoh City.
The hotel opened in 2013 and has a perfect location – close to the business and entertainment districts.
It’s close to shops, cafes, eating streets, and within walking distance of cultural and historical sites.

MU Hotel Ipoh
Overall, the MÙ Hotel is a modern hotel and a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of Ipoh city life.
They spread the 113 guest rooms over eight floors. There is a 24-hour reception.
MU Hotel Design Accolades
In 2015, Perth’s SCHIN Architects received the ‘International Architecture Commendation for Interior Architecture’ from the Australian Institute of Architects for MU Hotel’s design.
They present annual awards for outstanding works in interior architecture.
These awards recognize bold and innovative designs by Australian firms abroad.
MÙ Hotel is a testament to this prestigious award.
MU rooms
The guest rooms and suites are generously sized, airy, and bright, with spots of color.
The wardrobe has an extra pillow, many hangers, an iron with an ironing board, and two pairs of complementary bedroom slippers.
The small round table is suitable for working on my laptop.
In-room facilities include FREE Wi-Fi and a mini-bar with coffee and tea-making facilities.
Comes with a large functional bathroom with a separate shower and WC cubicles.
The only snag is if you’re in the shower, your roommate may not use the WC as there is only one sliding door.
For instance, a few hotels, like Lone Pine in Penang, have this design.
They equip the guest rooms with wireless internet, television, and Wi-Fi.
MUnch Restaurant
I can’t help but think the functional layout is like a cafeteria, great for seating groups.
The breakfast is simple and adequate for local and Western-style breakfasts.
With such a wide variety of tasty local food in Ipoh’s kopitiams, warungs, cafes, and restaurants, MÙ Hotel did the right thing by not overproviding a huge breakfast spread.
To start my day, toast with good salted butter and a hot cuppa from the coffee machine is enough for me.
Most hotel guests probably think like me: save your calories for the good authentic Ipoh food outside the hotel.
MU Rooftop Bar
Enjoy the city’s panoramic views and verdant hills in the evenings and enjoy the sunset at the swanky rooftop MÙ bar.
The MÙ signature cocktail packs a punch with pomelo juice and cinnamon.
