Older Penangites remember James Foo Western Restaurant famed as the better western café at Jalan Fettes and Jalan Tanjung Tokong.
In the 1980s, there were two hawker-style western food places before the area was developed.
I remember liking the generous proportions that James Foo served.
The food is delicious and adorable. It’s been years since I dropped by for a meal.

I have had dinners there three times this February, and I find myself a regular customer with the same order. Grilled chicken and pork steak.
I love the generous portions of the meat, which has a tinge of ginger marinate.
James Foo has expanded his menu to include pizza and all kinds of pasta. The meat dishes still fly off the grille literally.
James Foo has been serving his À la carte menu as the standard. Nett prices.
A good portion of meat with coleslaw, or mashed potatoes and some fresh greens.
There are a few choices of sauces: Brown sauce, mushroom, and black pepper.
My choice has always been a nice brown sauce, which goes brilliantly with my grille chicken and pork combo set.
A huge scoop of cold coleslaw and a mound of greens with a drizzle of seafood sauce. That works great for me.
Mix Grilled has a slice of bacon, beef, lamb, a sausage, and a pan-fried egg.
This portion of marinated and grilled meat is juicy and tender.
James Foo Western Restaurant Review
The prices are reasonable for drinks, and you get tall drinks ranging from around RM2 to RM5.
If you are desperate to quench your thirst, you can opt for the jumbo-sized fruit juices.
These are suitable for 2 persons.
Over the past few three decades, James Foo has rightly earned the title as the “Delicious and adorable western food.”
Just ask his regulars who drop by several times a month to chow down.
