A Legacy of Peranakan Cuisine

Peranakan families have long been the keepers of a unique culinary legacy, their kitchens brimming with enticing aromas of tangy, aromatic, and spicy fare.

There were no Peranakan restaurants in the past.

Each household developed its own take on traditional Nyonya recipes.

Their cooking method is guided by intuition rather than measurements.

Nyonyas use this ‘agak-agak’ method to cook.

The ingredients are adjusted by instinct or feel.

That is why all Nyonya dishes are quite different.

At Nyonya Chiak, every dish celebrates this unique legacy.

The recipes range from delicate heirloom recipes everyone loves to rich, savory ones.

Overall, the menu captures the diverse flavors of Nyonya’s cooking.

Our tasting menu began with the irresistible Pandan Fried Chicken, its crispy skin infused with the unmistakable aroma of pandan leaves.

Next came the Stir-fried Prawn Ramen, a delightful medley of noodles, prawns, and vegetables.

Followed by Fried Lobak, whose golden, crunchy exterior gave way to a flavorful filling.

No Peranakan meal is complete without Chicken Satay—tender skewers paired with a rich peanut sauce.

A must-order is the popular street food Oyster Omelette, not found in other Nyonya restaurants in Penang.

This dish balances the briny freshness of oysters with a hint of spice.

No Nyona meal is complete without Jui Hu Char and Pai Tee.

The stir-fried shredded vegetables are spooned into

crisp shell cups and eaten with a dollop of sambal belacan.

Jui Hu Char embodies the essence of Peranakan food in Penang.

Nyonya Desserts: A Sweet Finale

The culinary adventure continued with a selection of vibrant Nyonya desserts.

Each dessert was a work of art, from chewy Ang Ku Kue to delicate Kueh Kochi.

The meal concluded with bowls of refreshing Ais Kacang and Cendol.

Their icy sweetness contrasted with the robust, spicy flavors of the main dishes.

We tried the desserts, all presented beautifully.
