Pablo’s Tacos Has 7 Malaysian Twist On Tantalizing Tacos

If you’re searching for an extraordinary taco experience, look no further than Pablo’s Tacos in Penang.

This vibrant restaurant has won the hearts of locals and visitors with its innovative take on traditional tacos.

My anticipation to try it had been building since my chef friend recommended this place.

I set out with LeeHong on a Tuesday, only to find it closed.

Our disappointment led us to several nearby cafes, but their offerings left much to be desired.

Instead of the tacos I was craving.

I got a plate of heavily seasoned minced chicken on a heap of french fries!

That was a struggle to enjoy.

A meal with LeeHong is usually a delightful exchange of ideas, but the French Fries meal was joyless.

LeeHong amusingly suggested it had a somewhat ‘taco flavoring.’

Undeterred, I was determined to visit again, this time on a wet and windy Saturday around lunch.

I was sure Pablo’s would be open.

For those who know me, my determination for food is marked with a capital ‘D.’

Some even say it’s like Dory’s persistence. Oh well!

Let’s dive into their menu and uncover why Pablo’s Tacos is a must-visit destination.

Experience Pablo’s Tacos with a Malaysian Twist

Pablo’s is the ultimate destination for savoring delectable tacos with a Malaysian twist.

While I haven’t been to Mexico, foreign cuisine often adopts a Malaysian twist when prepared here.

I fondly recall a meal prepared by a Mexican air stewardess whom my former colleague dated.

I was invited to their house party on one occasion in 1997, and to my delight, there was a magnificent spread of Mexican food.

I vividly remember exclaiming,

“Wow, you girls are amazing cooks; everything tastes so delicious.”

To my surprise, one of the girls winked and invited me to follow her to the kitchen.

To my amusement, I discovered their entire stash of empty Maggi Mexican Seasoning wrappers in the dustbin.

We shared a hearty laugh over the revelation.

I admit I’ve resorted to similar tactics when cooking Malaysian dishes overseas. It’s a culinary confession, after all.

Back to Pablo’s, their menu boasts seven tantalizing flavors.

Some great soft shell taco options to try are –

  • Prawns
  • Smoked duck
  • Beef
  • Chicken bak kwa
  • Chicken keema
  • Lamb
  • Fish

If you’re up for a culinary adventure, try all seven or perhaps just the top three.

When I arrived at Pablo’s, it was my third meal, so I decided to stick with one item.

While the prawns were recommended, I opted for Pablo’s Beefin, a taco with grilled beef slices.

The soft-shell tacos perfectly matched the juicy beef.

The combination of cheese and purple cabbage was excellent.

It’s a must-try.

The choices continue beyond just the tacos.

Savor your meal with an ice-cold beer, making it ideal for sharing the experience with friends.

Alternatively, you can grab your food if you’re in a hurry.

It’s no surprise that Pablo’s has become a local hotspot.

I found the food freshly cooked and the service good.

Drinks: Bru Coffee

Pablo’s might be owned by the same person as the Indian restaurant next door, as my Bru coffee came from there.

The coffee was too watery and not hot enough.

Other Delights on Pablo’s Menu

In addition to tacos, Pablo’s offers mini quesadillas, pasta, nachos and fries.

I’m not a huge nachos fan.

I once had some very nice ones at the Westin Kuala Lumpur about ten years ago.

However, considering the price, I’ll undoubtedly mark this restaurant for a return visit.

The food was delicious and worth the money.

I plan to order their signature pasta and the Prawnstar (Prawn Taco), Lambo (Lamb Taco), and Swim Shady (Fish Taco) on my next trip.

Pablo’s Ambiance

The restaurant boasts friendly staff and a pleasant dining atmosphere.

It exudes a bar-like vibe, even without the alcohol.

The street view adds to the charm.

Parking at Pablo’s

Finding parking can be a test of patience and pure determination.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more, there’s a private parking area within walking distance.

Your best bet might be to visit in the evening or on the weekend.

Or consider using a ride-sharing service like Grab.
