Chinese New Year 2023 hits a high note as it’s been the longest first time since we’ve been able to gather in large groups.
Most Penangites are foodies, and there’s no better way to usher in the Year of the Rabbit than with a bountiful feast with your loved ones.
Smartdory is happy to usher in the Year of the Rabbit in 2023 with dining out and some of the best Chinese New Year menus in hotels and restaurants in Penang.
Let’s start with Round One of reunion dinners.
The Mercure Penang Beach Hotel recently hosted members of the tourist sector, corporate clients, food bloggers, and influencers for a Chinese New Year preview.
Smartdory was happy to meet old friends, such as Mercure Penang Beach Hotel general manager Mr. Navin Nishaal and marketing communications manager Ms. Izza Safinaz Ibrahim.
Guest enjoyed cocktails and snacked on some delicious cookie cupcakes in the shape of small mandarin oranges.
CNY 2023 Reunion Buffet Yee Sang Toss
Staying true to traditional practices, guests were ushered to the Yee Sang Tossing ceremony, which allowed diners to relish the spirited and laughter-filled “tossing for good fortune” ritual.
Everyone enjoyed themselves tossing higher and higher with good wishes everyone can say while tossing:
- gong xi fa cai (恭喜发财),
- shen ti jian kang (身体健康),
- wan shi ru yi (万事如意),
- lou hei
- HUAT ARRRRR!!!!
Guests were treated to a preview of the Mercure CNY 2023 Reunion Buffet Dinner on 21 January 2023.
Chef Joshua and the culinary team prepared a fantastic spread of auspicious dishes for the buffet.
The abundant buffet spread is filled with favorite auspicious Asian dishes and the ever-popular Fresh Seafood Bar, which boasts Shellfish On Ice!
SmartDory made a beeline for her favorites – Slipper Lobsters, Scallops, Mussels, Oysters, Tiger Prawns, Clams, and Flower Crabs.
Appetizers included Chicken Loh Bak, Thai Kerabu Mango, and Marinated Baby Octopus.
My favorite part of the festive buffet is the appetizers, including Satay (I prefer the yummeh Beef Satay), Chicken Loh Bak, Thai Kerabu Mango, and those cute Japanese-style Marinated Baby Octopus.
Main Courses featured Whole Baked Fish with Soy Sauce Dressing, Tiger Prawns in Butter Sauce, Braised Sea Cucumber with Mushrooms, Broccoli & Cashew Nuts.
For meats, there’s a delectable Roast Lamb with Black Pepper Sauce!
Desserts included fresh-cut fruits, Nyonya Kuih, Bread Pudding, pastries, cakes, and a chocolate fountain.
Lots of lovely desserts. My favorites are these, especially the Bread Pudding!
