Holy Guacamole, that’s a big fish!
I remember the television show Batman (1966-68), which popularized “Holy guacamole!”
And I am very certain that the origin of this exclamation of surprise is uncertain.
In the 1940s, “Captain Marvel” comic books popularized the script of “Holey Moley!”
But then, I was probably knee-high to a grasshopper.
Which explains the trepidation and long overdue time I take to write anything.
I remember having several meals at Holy Guacamole in 2018.
My first Mexican meal was probably 30 years ago when my colleagues dated some Mexican flight attendants.
I remember my first taste of Mexican cuisine – so tasty.
I remember asking Adela and her friend how they made the dishes.
The girls laughed and led me to the kitchen and opened the cabinets.
I burst out laughing too.
They had enlisted Maggi’s help in creating the dishes.
Both girls confessed that they couldn’t cook except to assemble food.

Wickedly Delicious Tex-Mex Food That’s Real Mexican Cuisine
I tried some wickedly good tacos, burritos, and margaritas in Singapore.
There is proof that Singapore has good Tex-Mex food.
We’re not talking about Taco Bell here.
On my last trip to Houston, I made a stop at the local Taco Bell for Doritos Locos Tacos.
I really like the crunchy Taco with ground beef, lettuce, and cheddar cheese in a shell made of Doritos chips drizzled with Ranch dressing.
That was when I fell in love with Ranch dressing and had to eat all my salad with this.
I never got to try all the top 10 Mexican dishes. Maybe I did, but I probably stick to the few names that I remember.
- Guacamole
- Tacos
- Enchiladas
- Burritos
- Quesadilla
How do I order Holy Guacamole if I know nothing about the other things on the menu?
- Chilaquiles
- Pozole
- Tostadas
- Chiles en nogada
- Elote
- Mole
- Tamales
Can’t Tell the Difference Between Mexican Dishes?
Nope! That’s me.
I feel gleeful when my Singaporean friends ask if I want the best Prata.
And it turns out to be our Malaysian Roti Canai.
So, it is difficult for me to tell the difference between Burritos and Tacos.
What Are Enchiladas and Quesadilla?
I’m just getting confused reading the long list of items at Holy Guacamole – to find the perfect Mexican dish for my taste.
I just asked Baby Fish to order for us.
What’s the difference between Tacos, Burritos, Enchiladas, Quesadillas, and Guacamole?
Let’s get started.
Many items are wrapped. Malaysians will love this Popiah style of eating.
Here is the basic difference between the wrapper and shell size.
Burritos have cylinder-shaped wraps.
They fold tacos in half to hold the stuffing in place.
Snacks or a full meal?
You could go for a Taco or two for a light snack or a quick bite.
If you can eat or want a hearty, full meal—get the bigger tortilla and order a Burrito.
Skins and Shells
Burritos use flour tortillas as they fall apart more easily.
Tacos use corn tortillas; you can order a soft or a hard shell Taco.
Hard taco shells are often made by placing a softshell in a pan of hot oil and frying it until it hardens.
By choosing a soft taco shell, also known as a burrito shell, you can save on calories.
The Filling
Taco tends to have one type of meat and lighter toppings, whereas Burritos are juicy and flavorful!
Burritos have juicy meat fillings.
- Plain white rice, brown rice, quinoa, or Mexican Red Rice!
- Corn
- Black beans
- Cabbage or lettuce
- Diced tomato
- Red onion
- Cheese
- Coriander/Cilantro
What is Enchilada?
I remember ordering this once, and it came in a set of two.
The Enchiladas are oven-baked, topped with chili sauce, and full of melted shredded cheese on top.
The toppings: chopped fresh cilantro, sliced avocado, diced red onion, sour cream, crumbled Cotija cheese, and whatever else looked and tasted great!
What about Quesadillas?
A quesadilla comprises two filled tortillas with meat, cheese, and vegetables sandwiched between them.
They cook this on the grill until the cheese melts. The best part is when the entire dish is topped with Guacamole.
How to make Guacamole?
You can make a Guacamole with ripe avocados, finely diced jalapeno pepper, a small onion, diced tomatoes, chopped fresh cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice, and sea salt.
But making one that is just right, not too runny, too thick, is not so simple.

Holy Guacamole Mexican Restaurant & Bar @ Love Lane
Vegan-friendly restaurant Holy Guacamole is one of the few rare Mexican joints in George Town that is a vibrant, hipster bar with live-band performances come nightfall.
The restaurant serves meat, with vegan options like pumpkin mushroom burritos available.
The bar at Holy Guacamole has a happy hour, and the wait staff are friendly and speak English.
If you want to go for dinner, you must drop by early as the place turns into a busy, hipster bar with live-band performances in the evenings until late.
Mexican Culture, Symbolism, and Celebrations
For some of us, our first exposure to a Calaca (the Mexican Spanish name for a skeleton), commonly used for decoration during the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, was from Disney Pixar’s COCO: Bringing Skeletons To Life.
In this vibrant tale of family, fun, and adventure, aspiring 12-year-old musician Miguel struggles against his family’s generations-old ban on music.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico on 2 November.
Calavera, the Mexican skull art, was created with cane sugar and decorated with colored foil, icing, beads, and feathers.
Holy Guacamole Mexican Flavour & Deco
The most striking is the vivid mural splashing outside the building with the Calavera adorning the wall painting that stretches the restaurant’s entire length.
The unique wall painting is an attractive backdrop for your Instagram feed as you feast on tacos, burritos, or fajitas.
There are Sombrero Prop (Mexican hats) that you can wear to take some photos.
Tourists within the vicinity love to flock here to chill out in the evenings to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Holy Guacamole Menu
The food menu is extensive—lots of items to choose from.
Most of the drinks are alcohol-focused, with great service from the servers.
I have tried the tamarind-flavored soft drink Jarritos on a trip to Holy Guacamole.
If you like the tart taste of the tamarind extract, you will enjoy this drink.
The price of the alcoholic drinks is mid-range, and the service from the servers is exceptional.
Since I have only a few items on the menu, I can’t say whether the food is less authentic than real Mexican food.
Mexican Food—What to Order at Holy Guacamole?
Jalapeno Popper (RM15)
Jalapeno peppers are very spicy hot peppers!
The Fresh Jalapenos are hollowed out and filled with a rich, creamy cheese filling, breaded and deep-fried.
These poppers are perfect snacks!
I expected the Jalapeno peppers to taste good heat, but these are too mild.
They still look very green after frying.
Maybe these are different varieties, as the ones I’ve seen and tasted are very different in the US.
Tacos de Camaron (Shrimp Tacos) (RM15)
Pan-seared, perfectly cooked Shrimp dusted in bold Mexican flavor on a bed of shredded cabbage, a spoonful of Creamy Guacamole, and a squeeze of lime.
Adding too much lime juice can cause a watery Guacamole.
The Shrimp Tacos were tasty but a little difficult to eat as the Guacamole kept dripping out.
Quesadilla Fiesta Beef (RM26)
Ingredients for Quesadilla include cheese, onions, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, and pulled beef.
This favorite was something Uncle Mike introduced at his café, Big Beans.
Getting the tortilla crispy is the best way to a delicious Quesadilla.
Churros with Chocolate Sauce (RM16)
Churros should be soft but not doughy inside.
So far, I haven’t had delicious Churros.
Normally, I wouldn’t eat fried dough with sugar, so eating Churros with a dusting of sugar (hey, where’s the cinnamon)
Holy Guacamole Review:
Overall, the food was good but not outstanding.
Holy Guacamole Taco serves great as bites if are here for weekend drinking.
