Ghim Ghim (Pulau Tikus): Social Media Hype, Modest Reality

Ghim Ghim Cafe in Pulau Tikus has been making the rounds on social media, especially for its matcha drinks.

From the viral reels, you might expect a spacious, lifestyle-driven café setup with easy access and a polished experience.

The reality is more grounded.

Housed within a semi-detached home that shares space with an active law office, the café is easy to miss.

I had actually driven past it earlier without noticing it. If you’re not specifically looking for it, chances are you’ll miss it too.

Challenging Accessibility

Parking is the biggest friction point here.

Unlike some converted homes along the main roads in George Town that offer at least some nearby parking, Ghim Ghim operates within a tighter residential setup.

After circling the block several times, I ended up parking at Taman Berjaya and walking back in the midday heat, roughly 5–6 minutes.

It’s manageable, but not exactly convenient, especially for a casual coffee stop.

An no, it is not in the entire semi-detached house. It takes the side entrance and back.

Space & Comfort

Tight and Noisy

Inside the cafe with a clean, cramped setting. Tables placed so close together.

The café operates through a side entrance, taking over what appears to be the former living, dining, and kitchen areas of the semi-detached house.

Seating capacity is limited, likely around 20–25 pax.

Cooling isn’t an issue. Two cassette air-conditioning units keep the space comfortable temperature-wise.

The bigger concern is acoustics. With hard surfaces throughout, noise builds up quickly.

Once a few tables are occupied, conversations carry and overlap, making it harder to sit back and relax.

Table spacing is tight, and making a trip to the bathroom takes  a lot of manoeuvring.

The seating varies in comfort. Some options feel more functional than considered, which makes longer stays less appealing.

Food & Drinks: Simple, But Not Distinctive

The cafe does not a full kitchen setup, so expectations should be adjusted.

There’s no hot food offering, and pastries appear to be sourced rather than baked on-site.

The selection is straightforward. Croissants, danishes, and banana bread are available.

But nothing particularly stands out visually or in terms of variety.

What we tried.

Ghim Ghim Dirty Latte RM16

A standard cup. Drinkable, but nothing particularly memorable.

Black (Hot / Iced) RM11

The cafe uses a floral-leaning bean

It comes across acidic and a bit astringent.

I took a sip and didn’t appreciate it.

This may appeal to some, but it leans away from a smoother, more balanced profile.

Chocolate Black Sesame Cloud RM16

Smooth and well-integrated, though the flavour profile is fairly familiar.

Matcha & Hojicha (RM13–RM15)

The core focus here is clear. The optional “Pillow Series” adds a cream topping for an extra RM2.

It follows a trend seen across many cafés, which we didn’t try.

Overall, the drinks are competent, but not particularly distinctive.

Service & Experience

Service was functional but minimal.

There was no greeting upon entry and the baristas looked overwhelmed handling a full house.

We counted about 25pax and it was very crowded and  noise level was high.

However the drinks were served individually without trays or accompanying items like napkins or spoons.

It gets the job done, but doesn’t add much to the overall experience.

Hygiene & Facilities

A clear positive here. There are two cubicles  newly done, clean, and well-maintained.

Final Thoughts

Ghim Ghim works best if you’re specifically seeking a matcha-focused café and don’t mind the trade-offs in access and space.

For a more relaxed, comfortable café experience with easier parking, there are stronger options nearby.

This feels more like a one-time visit than a regular spot.
