GDGN Vintage Cuisine 廣東姑娘 is worth a visit if you’re craving Hong Kong-style comfort food or a cozy retro café experience in Penang.
When I was working away from Penang, breakfast was my daily comfort.
I’d always invite Susan Cheh to eat with me. She’d say, “Always that Nissin noodles with ham and egg, Ying Yong and tan tat? You not bored?” Still, she came along every morning.
We never took many photos, but those quiet breakfasts meant everything — a shared moment before the day began.
Now that I’m back home, I’ve found a new breakfast partner in Queenie.
Together, we enjoy exploring cafés and eateries across Penang.

GDGN Vintage Cuisine 廣東姑娘
One of our favorite finds is GDGN Vintage Cuisine 廣東姑娘, tucked away on Bishop Street.
From the outside, it looks like a regular Chinese restaurant.
But inside, it feels like a vintage Hong Kong cha chaan teng — with 80s Cantopop, old movie posters, and QR code ordering for convenience.
We were quite hungry and ordered some Polo Buns to kick start our meal.
Polo Bao
We tried the Polo Bao, which had a nicely crunchy top.
The bread was a bit dense, and the butter — served at room temperature — lacked the chilled richness of the HK versions served with ice cubes.

Pork Chop Nissin Dry Noodles
We both ordered the Pork Chop Nissin Dry Noodles, served with a sunny side egg and extra luncheon meat.
The pork chop was surprisingly tender, and the flavours brought back so many memories.
The sambal was a nice touch — slightly spicy, fragrant, and addictive — though Queenie skipped it, as she doesn’t take chili.

Signature Yin Yeong
Their Signature Yin Yeong (Cham Peng, in Penang-speak) was thick, delicious, and not overly sweet.
Queenie opted for a few Coca-Colas, but these weren’t the HK-style ones with lemon slices inside — something I sorely missed.
Egg Tart
The egg tart was a standout: golden, flaky pastry with a tender egg custard center.
Freshly handmade and baked at low heat, it had that balance of crispiness and softness that’s hard to find.

GDGN Vintage Cuisine may not serve pure HK cuisine, but its nostalgic charm, fast service, and satisfying flavors make it worth visiting.
That morning, I thought of Susan.
And I smiled — because with Queenie, the food memories keep growing.
