Restoran Kakak is a shining example of Taiping’s charm, where old-world nostalgia, lush greenery, and incredible food come together seamlessly.
Among the town’s many culinary treasures, Restoran Kakak (家家茶室) stands out for its legendary Kai Si Hor Fun (Kuey Teow Soup with Shredded Chicken) and one-of-a-kind Kakak Peng coffee.

Kakak Peng
I still remember the first time I heard about Kakak Peng from Ah Boon.
We were working in Taiping and my contractor bought us some cold drinks.
“Kakak Peng? What’s that?” I had asked, eyeing the drink suspiciously.
“It’s coffee with barley,” they said, grinning.
“Trust me, you have to try it.”
Skeptical but curious, I took a sip—and that was it.
The smooth, rich Nescafé-style coffee was mellowed by the natural sweetness of barley, giving it a flavor unlike anything I had tasted before.
To be honest it felt unusual at firm as I took a gulp.
But it was refreshing, slightly nutty, and surprisingly addictive.
Available hot or cold, Kakak Peng is a must-try in Taiping.
Kai Si Hor Fun
Fast-forward to my latest visit to Taiping, and I knew exactly where I wanted to have breakfast: Restoran Kakak.
At 10 AM, the place was already packed, but I managed to find a spot.
I did not hesitate and immediately ordered a steaming bowl of Kai Si Hor Fun and a cold drink, the Kakak Peng.
When the bowl arrived, I could immediately tell why this dish has remained a local favorite.
The silky-smooth kway teow noodles reminded me of the ones famous in Ipoh.
The noodles were bathed in a light, flavorful broth with hints of prawn sweetness.
The garnish was tender, shredded chicken, and fragrant scallions.
Every mouthful was comforting, satisfying, and deeply nostalgic.
While Ipoh may be the gold standard for Kai Si Hor Fun, for local standard, I’d say Restoran Kakak readily serves the best version in Taiping.
