Fu Er Dai Dim Sum Restaurant in Penang

If you’re on the hunt for the best dim sum in Penang, let me introduce you to Fu Er Dai, my favorite outlet along Northam Road.

While I can’t recall the exact moment I first stepped into this bustling eatery, I vividly remember being captivated by its vibrant atmosphere and incredible food.

It’s been my go-to dim sum spot ever since.

A Lively and Welcoming Atmosphere

From the moment you walk in, Fu Er Dai greets you with the buzz of happy diners and the clink of chopsticks.

The lively vibe, often accompanied by the sight of locals and tourists (some even with luggage in tow), highlights the restaurant’s widespread appeal and loyal following.

Organized, Efficient, and Tourist-Friendly

Fu Er Dai stands out for its efficiency.

The organized queuing system and free parking ensure a hassle-free experience.

Despite the crowds, the service remains impressively fast, thanks to the experienced and friendly staff.

They’re always ready to recommend dishes or help you navigate the extensive menu.

Fu Er Dai Menu

Fu Er Dai transforms the classic dim sum into something extraordinary.

While the menu is packed with tempting options, it’s the visual displays that steal the show for me.

Being able to point and choose has its merits and truly does the talking.

They’re the best marketing tool for ordering with your eyes.

Premium Siew Mai

Imagine golf ball-sized Siew Mai, each one crowned with a plump, juicy prawn.

A true indulgence for dim sum lovers.

(Not a fan of fake prawn roe? I’m with you—it’s an acquired taste!)

Har Gao

Delicate, translucent crystal wrappers encase a generous prawn filling.

These little gems are as satisfying as they are beautiful.

Bacon Rolls

A savory combination of fish and pork paste, wrapped in crispy bacon and finished with a tangy sweet-sour BBQish glaze.

Every bite bursts with flavor. I mean, can bacon ever be a bad idea?

Never!

Nai Wong Bao

Cantonese Steamed Custard Buns with a luscious, oozy custard filling—best enjoyed hot (warm enough to hold with your fingers).

Otherwise, use chopsticks to avoid burning yourself.

If you’re a fan of soft, pillowy buns with a sweet, smooth filling, these are for you.

Personally, I usually give them a pass.

Ask me if you meet me, if I remember I’ll tell you. <wink>

Woo Kok

A Hakka lover’s yam (taro) dream!

This classic Cantonese dim sum is a crowd favorite.

The signature lacy, bird’s nest-like texture gives it a satisfying crunch, while the fluffy taro interior and juicy filling make every bite irresistible.

It’s the dim sum you just can’t stop eating hot from the frying wok.

But take it home, and by tea time, it loses its crunchy bite and turns sadly bland and oily when cold.

Shrimp Rolls

Golden-fried rolls of shrimp wrapped in crispy tofu skin.

It’s warm, perfect when dipped in creamy mayonnaise.

Simply irresistible.

If I remember to ask for mustard, I figured this will be outstanding!

Char Siu Bao

One of my mom’s absolute favorites is the Chinese Steamed BBQ Pork Buns.

These snowy-white buns are perfectly steamed, cracked open at the top, revealing a sweet and sticky BBQ pork filling.

A classic dim sum that never disappoints and something I will tapao home.

Har Cheung

Har Cheong is Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls.

While these Cheong Fun might not have the silky smooth texture of Hong Kong-style versions, but mom loves to eat the plain Cheong Fun with the Hare Bee Sambal.

My favorite?

The fried dough (youtiao) wrapped in rice noodle rolls—crispy, chewy, and oh-so-satisfying.

I had this at Dolly Dim Sum and they make an excellent version.

Pei Tan Chok

While the texture here isn’t as velvety as traditional Cantonese congee, this bowl still hits the spot if you are not a fussy eater!

The Century Egg and Pork Congee has bits of minced pork and century egg, it’s a comforting option for when hunger strikes.

Some of the Dim Sum items that are so delicious are the tseamed and braised favorites with sauces.

Steamed Spare Ribs

This seemingly simple dish is all about timing.

Steamed just enough to cook through, the result is juicy, tender ribs that melt in your mouth.

Overcooking can easily turn these delicate morsels into tough bites, but Fu Er Dai nails the balance every time.

Stuffed Red Chilies

A classic dim sum offering, these chilies are filled with flavorful fish paste and steamed to perfection.

The dish is elevated when paired with its savory sauce.

Chicken Feet

A Cantonese dim sum classic! While some might shy away, true fans know the magic of chicken feet lies in their preparation.

Deep-fried and then braised, they are soaked in a rich, savory sauce that enhances their unique, chewy texture.

It’s a dish that surprises and delights those willing to give it a try.

Stir Fried Noodles

The variety doesn’t stop there.

If you want a break from traditional dim sum staples, there are various fried noodles, fried rice, and stir-fried vegetables.

Sometimes we will order a Char Hor Fun without the Egg.

However, there is no plain rice.

Drinks

You can have your meal with a pot of Chinese tea, but my mom and I usually share a mug of Kopi O. As for Queenie, she likes a chilled can of Coke for a refreshing twist.

Perfect for Groups and Gatherings

Whether you’re dining solo, as a couple, or with a group, Fu Er Dai caters to all.

The large 10-seater tables are perfect for family gatherings or hangouts with friends.

It’s a place where memories are made over steaming baskets of dim sum.

My mom and I enjoy people-watching and seeing what other customers bring to their tables.

That’s always fun.

Why I Keep Coming Back

Each visit to Fu Er Dai feels like an adventure, with something new to discover.

It started when my editor introduced me to their incredible braised noodles with fried fish—a dish I never expected to find at a dim sum place.

Later, a friend insisted I try the bacon rolls, and they quickly became a must-order on every visit!

On a more recent trip, Queenie and I stumbled upon their stir-fried lettuce and vegetables—a revelation, considering I clearly never read the menu.

This always happens whenever I go to my favorite restaurants—I inevitably end up ordering the same dishes every single time.

Why change the formula when everything is already perfect, right?

Then, of course, the younger ones will chime in, saying,

“That is such aunty behavior!”

Add to that the quirky joy of pairing dim sum with an ice-cold Coca-Cola.

It’s these little surprises and the friendship of my younger friends that encourage me to venture out and try new restaurants and cafés.

“Imagine eating at the same shop every day for lunch!” they said.

Well, guess what—I actually did! Back when I worked next door to Hot Bowl, I had lunch there every single day for six months straight!

It’s not just me who raves about Fu Er Dai as the best dim sum in Penang.

Locals, including Grab drivers, often recommend it, and tourists consider it a must-visit spot.

The authentic flavors, efficient service, and welcoming ambiance make it a standout choice on the island.

Plan Your Visit to Fu Er Dai

If you’re craving an unforgettable dim sum feast, Fu Er Dai won’t disappoint.

Arrive early to avoid the crowd or bring your friends for a leisurely brunch.

Don’t forget to take away some items—they’re just as delightful at home!

One visit, and you’ll be hooked.
