Oriental Kopi Review: Why This Cafe Deserves a 5-Star Rating

When Oriental Kopi opened at Gurney Plaza, Irene and I were eager to try it.

The grand opening promotion featured an exciting 20% storewide discount (applicable to dine-in, takeaway, and all products), with value breakfasts starting from RM6.90.

We couldn’t wait to experience it for ourselves.

However, it wasn’t until November that we finally enjoyed a meal at Oriental Kopi.

Since its opening, the place has been buzzing with excitement.

Oriental Kopi: Authentic Malaysian Dishes

I visited Oriental Kopi three times, each time with a different dining companion: Raymond, Queenie, and Irene.

On my first visit, Raymond noticed my hesitation in joining the queue of 60 people.

It was day three of Oriental Kopi’s opening, and everyone and their grandmother wanted to try the discounted dishes!

He was picking up a takeaway breakfast and quickly waved me over.

Raymond invited me to enjoy my meal at his nearby showroom.

He suggested I try the curry mee and Kopi C to go, as waiting for a seat would take at least 75 minutes.

Oriental Kopi is one of those places where you’ll see a long queue, and you know it’s worth the wait.

The food is simply delicious.

In August, Queenie and I finally managed to queue for a seat, which was well worth it.

I often walk by to check randomly, and the place is always bustling.

The staff were well-trained and attentive, hustling to ensure every customer received their orders promptly.

We decided to try their signature Kopitiam style dishes.

Oriental Kopi’s menu offers an extensive selection of authentic Malaysian dishes.

During our visit, Queenie ordered several top items for us to share.

Polo Buns (菠蘿包)

Hong Kong-style Polo Buns are sweet buns topped with a pineapple-textured pastry crust.

Served warm and soft, they’re incredibly delicious with a generous pat of cold butter.

The iconic HK-style bun is light, fluffy, and paired with butter for a truly blissful experience.

Oriental Kopi's signature Butter Coffee served alongside a freshly baked Polo Bun with a crispy, golden-brown crust.

Oriental Kopi Signature Egg Tart

Signature Oriental Egg Tart

We tried the signature Oriental Egg Tart, known for its luscious, creamy filling and flaky, golden pastry.

It’s a decadent indulgence worth every calorie.

I also ordered the butter coffee, which was flavorful but too oily when paired with the Polo Bun.

Nasi Briyani

Queenie tried the flavorful Nasi Briyani, which wasn’t overly spicy.

The balanced taste made it a satisfying dish that left us craving more.

On our next visit, we tried the Roti Bakar, perfectly toasted to a crisp finish.

Double Butter Kaya Toast

The Double Butter Kaya Toast at Oriental Kopi is a rich, crispy version of regular Roti Bakar.

The aromatic pandan-flavored kaya (a coconut jam) with cold butter cut into sticks and sandwiched is delicious and affordable.

Nasi Lemak

During my visit with Irene, I tried the classic Nasi Lemak with juicy, fragrant fried chicken and crispy bits.

At the same time, it wasn’t like Village Park’s Nasi Lemak; the chicken and spicy-sweet sambal were standout features.

The sambal was perfectly balanced, though I’d have preferred more tamarind for extra tang.

The pandan-infused rice and soft-boiled egg with a runny yolk added richness, making the dish heavenly.

I even requested extra sambal to complete the meal.

Ipoh Herbal Soup Ramen

Irene ordered the Ipoh Herbal Soup Ramen.

She loved this comforting dish.

The rich, herbal soup was satisfying, and though the wait was longer than expected.

It arrived in a traditional black clay pot, keeping it piping hot throughout the meal.

Oriental Coffee

I tried Oriental Kopi’s signature Oriental Coffee.

The smooth, well-balanced Kopi C had bold, comforting flavors and was perfect for dine-in and takeaway.

While the Butter Kopi was too oily for my liking, it was still an interesting choice. For coffee lovers, don’t miss the Kopi C!

Things I’d Like to Try on My Next Visit

  • Curry Laksa Mee
  • Oriental Prawn Noodles

Final Words

Oriental Kopi stands out for its perfect temperature control.

Hot dishes are served piping hot, and cold drinks are well chilled.

The cafe offers Malaysian flavors in generous portions, making it a must-visit for food lovers.

If you’re in the area and don’t miss queuing, this is a good Kopitiam that does not disappoint to experience.
