1947 Namaste India Exquisite Indian Cuisine

Recently, we visited Kuala Lumpur and stumbled upon 1947 Namaste India at Old Malaya, Lorong Raja Chulan.

B and I love Indian cuisine, and we’ve been searching for a great Indian restaurant with authentic chefs from India.

Our never-ending love story with Indian cuisine continues here, marking a distinct chapter in the epic narrative of Indian food culture, encompassing more than just the Northern and Southern cooking styles.

Discovering the Best Indian Restaurant in KL

I asked my friends in Kuala Lumpur where to go for Indian food in KL and PJ, and most recommendations pointed to Brickfields.

However, we wanted a nice sit-down restaurant that also serves cocktails.

We found a few promising places: Nadodi at the Four Seasons Hotel and Gajaa at 8 in Bangsar.

Instead, we decided to check out the highly acclaimed spots like Sauerkraut KL, ZENZERO Restaurant & Wine Bar, and Malai Thai Cuisine (featured in the Michelin Guide) at Amplewest@Menara.

Further down Jalan Raja Chulan, just a short 10-minute walk in the rain from Amplewest@Menara, we found a listing for more restaurants in Old Malaya.

Old Malaya boasts a host of promising restaurants, including the Latin American restaurant Poblano KL, Malay cuisine at Irama Dining Kuala Lumpur, Pampas Steakhouse, Italian fare at Luce Osteria Contemporanea, and Pier 12 Seafood Tavern.

We were thrilled to discover 1947 Namaste India among these options.

It’s rare to stumble upon a restaurant that captivates every sense and leaves a lasting impression.

1947 Namaste India boasts over 607 Google reviews and is rated 4.8 stars.

Cocktails and Beverages

Our attentive server recommended the cocktails, which were simply irresistible.

We ordered two cocktails and a beer from the drinks menu.

B had the New York Sour, with its float of dry red wine, offered the perfect balance of fruity red wine and smoky-sweet bourbon.

This classic cocktail is a favorite for a reason. It was a first for me, and I must admit the cocktail was tasty.

I had the Classic Lychee Martini.

With their interesting sour bite, the pink and sweet lychees taste a mix of strawberry, watermelon, and grapes.

Their sweetness and tartness contrast nicely with the liqueur, creating a refreshing and delicious cocktail.

Exploring the Menu

For dinner, we were eager to order Gol Gappe (Pani Puri), crispy shells stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas, and green moong.

We loved these Pani Puri topped with chutneys and served with special spiced water.

However, to our disappointment, they were sold out.

The variety of street cuisine offered here astonished me.

I wasn’t very familiar with North Indian street cuisine, so I was impressed when I saw the nicely presented items on our tables.

Mutton Rogan Josh and Paneer Tikka Masala

Instead, we decided on two dishes.

Mutton Rogan Josh is undoubtedly one of our favorite dishes, and for good reason.

Picture succulent bone-in lamb cooked to perfection in a traditional rich gravy infused with a medley of aromatic Indian spices.

The fragrance of cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon intermingles with the earthy notes of cumin and coriander, created a tantalizing aroma.

It whets the appetite.

Every tender bite of lamb is a burst of flavor.

The spices meld seamlessly with the meat, imparting depth and complexity to each mouthful.

Paneer Tikka Masala is a vegetarian delight that packs a punch.

Imagine cubes of creamy cottage cheese marinated and grilled in the tandoor until they gain a smoky, charred exterior.

These perfectly grilled paneer cubes are then bathed in a luscious gravy that’s rich and flavorful.

The fragrant spices, including garam masala, turmeric, and paprika, infuse the dish with warmth and depth.

While the tanginess of tomatoes adds a delightful contrast.

The paneer, soaked in the flavorful gravy, becomes incredibly tender, practically melting in your mouth with every forkful.

For those who enjoy a bit of spice, the dishes are expertly balanced to awaken the taste buds without overwhelming them.

From the aromatic spices to the tender meats and creamy paneer, every element is carefully crafted.

The chefs deliver an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates India’s rich culinary heritage.

Delightful Breads

We ordered Aloo Paratha (Indian Potato-Stuffed Flatbread) and Lachhedar Paratha (Crispy-Layered Indian Flat Bread).

The warm, pillowy texture of the Aloo Paratha provided the perfect canvas for soaking up the rich gravies of our main dishes.

Each bite revealed a delightful burst of seasoned mashed potatoes encased within the soft, flaky layers of the paratha.

It has a comforting and hearty element to every mouthful.

On the other hand, the Lachhedar Paratha offered a crispy and satisfying contrast to the creamy gravies.

Its flaky layers and golden, buttery exterior provided a delightful crunch with each bite.

Together, these breads complemented the robust flavors of our dishes.

Each elevating them to new heights of culinary delight.

Aside from the good hospitality, excellent Indian cuisine, reasonable prices, and cozy ambiance, 1947 Namaste India stands out for its exceptional service.

The food quality and service are top-notch, focusing primarily on North Indian cuisine.
