On the day of our visit, a public holiday, Cara Caro Café, was bursting at the seams with patrons.
The little cafe was packed to the rafters.
This phenomenon is not unique to Penang; everyone and their grandma (including me) wants to try a new cafe in Penang.

Cara Caro appears to be dressed by the owner with a cozy, aesthetically pleasing ambiance.
Every nook and cranny provides an ideal backdrop for your Instagram feed.
Taking a shot without capturing faces was nigh impossible with every seat taken.
Macramé, a textile art form known for its ’60s and ’70s bohemian revival, is a key part of Cara Caro Café’s delightful Bohemian-style experience.
Cara Caro Pastries
The daily selection of freshly baked pastries and cakes is one of the highlights of Cara Caro Cafe that you can find on display.
The staff told me there are daily offerings, and available pastries and cakes may vary daily.
Cara Caro Menu
The cafe offers a delightful experience for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, drinks, and desserts.
As for the menu, it features a limited selection of mains.
The sets are perfect for you if you must eat rice and spice for every meal.
The food is served on small plates and wooden trays. Cara Caro Cafe is pork-free.
The dishes we tried were so-so, with the Cara Caro Fried Chicken being the most delicious item.
What We Tried at Cara Caro Cafe
Cafe Recommended Items were Half & Half Sourdough (Avocado + Blueberries) for RM26.
Another table ordered that. I figured I could assemble this myself, so I ordered the Prawn or Chicken Set.
Overnight Oats for RM18.
Erin ordered this.
It looked pretty, and she enjoyed her meal.
I’m not one for overnight oats.
Cara Caro Fried Chicken Set for RM26.
TC & Ivan decided to try a meatier dish.
The fried chicken was well-marinated with spices, well-cooked, aromatic, tender, and juicy, not too salty or sweet.
The Chicken is topped with kerisik (toasted grated coconut).
I got a bit of the kerisik to try.
Grated lemongrass adds a nutty flavor, deep smoky-toasty flavor, and slightly fibrous chew.
It’s served with steamed rice, a sunny-side-up egg, corn soup, cucumber slices, tomato, and a special sambal.
Chili Prawn Set for RM28.
I got four fresh prawns in a thick sambal paste.
What is missing from the salty flavor of the prawn is the kick from a fiery sambal and a citrusy note of kaffir lime leaves.
It has a middle-of-the-road taste.
The sambal needs to be cooked until pecah minyak.
While this is a healthier version, the cafe can amp up the flavor profile.
It’s served with steamed rice, a sunny-side-up egg, corn soup, cucumber slices, tomato, and stir-fried mustard greens.
I was joking with my dining companions that we had the same menu for family dinner that night, except that everything at home would be served hot.
The rice sets are an interesting combo if you must eat rice for every meal.
Caffeine Fix
Rose Latte for RM15
Latte for RM14
Iced Latte for RM15

In summary, if you’re an ardent rice lover, the rice sets at Cara Caro Cafe are the comfort food that will satisfy your cravings.
