Xiangshan Fish Steamboat at Gurney Plaza boasts a distinctive wooden barrel steamboat that truly sets it apart from other restaurants!

The newly opened Xiangshan (pronounced Xi-ang Sh-an) Fish Steamboat brings a novel dining experience of premium live fish.

Their specialty is fish soup stock, slowly brewed for hours before being served in giant wooden Xiangshan barrels on tabletop settings.

At Xiangshan Fish Steamboat, the culinary magic unfolds within wooden barrels.

Here fish, stones, cucumber slices, tomato slices, green pepper, and other ingredients simmer and boil harmoniously.

This China-brand restaurant offers an enticing “sauna pot” hotpot.

We got to experience with a special offer of unlimited Tilapia fish per person.

During my initial visit, I encountered a language barrier.

Being English-educated, I was unable to read the predominantly Mandarin menu.

I was determined to experience this enchanting realm of fish steamboat dining, so I embarked on an exhilarating culinary voyage.

For SmartDory fans, I have heard your request to include more Chinese cuisine in the blog.

Why is Steamboat Popular?

Steamboats are the best thing to eat on rainy days and have a unique way of warming your body on cold days.

Steamboat gatherings are popular.

They allow everyone to select their favorite ingredients and cook them together in a communal pot.

Common foods like cabbages, meat slices, fish balls, mushrooms, prawns, and enoki mushrooms are placed around the pot for easy access.

Additionally, some restaurants pair steamboats with barbecue, making it a common practice that enhances the dining experience.

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat Promotion

During a recent visit with my friend Susan, we took advantage of the promotional offer, which included unlimited fresh fish and rice.

This package, priced at RM48.80++ for adults and RM28.80++ for children below 6, promised an enjoyable dining experience.

We encountered some communication challenges with our server.

Susan and I needed help reading the menu, primarily in Chinese, with small English fonts.

Additionally, our server needed more proficiency in Hokkien and English.

Eventually, we resorted to communicating in Malay, and she was exceptionally helpful in explaining the menu items to us.

Although our primary focus was on the fish, we couldn’t resist the temptation to savor some delectable side dishes, including Fish Skin, Cheesy Tofu, and Glutinous Balls.

Steamboat Soups

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat offers four soup bases that one can choose from Original, Classic, Tomato, and Sauerkraut.

  • Original (immunity boosting and nourishing)
  • Classic (helps eliminate fatigue)
  • Tomato (beauty care soup)
  • Sauerkraut (improves appetite and aids digestion)

The Classic and Sauerkraut soup are spicy, while the Original and Tomato are non-spicy.

We chose the Original Soup, known for bringing out the delicate flavors of fresh ingredients.

The Importance of Soup

The soup is the cornerstone of an excellent steamboat experience, as it can make or break the meal.

In the past, you could only choose one type of soup at a time due to pot limitations.

However, modern pot designs allow you to enjoy two to four soup bases simultaneously.

Common soup choices include clear soup and tom yum, but today’s options extend to tomato, mala, curry, and satay.

The variety of options ensures that steamboat dining remains an exciting experience, even for regular patrons.

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat Original Soup Taste

The Original Soup we selected had a rich, milky texture with a delightful sweetness that added depth to the dining experience.

Super Fresh Tilapia Fish

‘Just how fresh is the fish?’

We inquired, and our server assured us it had practically been swimming before it ‘swam’ to our table.

The fresh Tilapia Fish served at Xiangshan Fish Steamboat was perfectly descaled, gutted, and filleted, ensuring top-notch quality.

The thin fish slices intact are great for steamboats.

They cook perfectly in one minute, infusing the broth with their delicious flavor as they simmer.

The delicate fish were fresh and devoid of earthy odors, making them a delightful addition to our steamboat experience.

I found out later that the fish were marinated in Chinese Cooking wine and went well with the soup.

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat Experience

Prepared with live fresh fish, herbs, and natural ingredients, the fish soup base is poured into the tabletop wooden barrels lined with heated river pebbles.

For the first round, the server adds the fish slices, along with the fish head and bones, to the soup.

This cooks in one minute, and these fish fillets are immediately served hot with nutritional milky fish soup.

Marinated in Chinese cooking wine, the Tilapia Fish slices remained exceptionally fresh, tender, and simply DELICIOUS!

We ordered more fish to add to the pot for the unlimited fish promo.

The aroma of the fish soup is refreshing and wafts around the restaurant while we slurp the piping-hot soup.

The soup got tastier with more fish!

Add more ingredients, such as vegetables, meat, tofu, and pan mee noodles, to the naturally delicious fish soup until it bubbles.

Side Dishes

You can add a long list of side dishes, including meat, tofu, fishballs, vegetables, and noodles.

Cheesy Tofu (Steamboat Ingredient)

We decided not to add other meats because we wanted a clean and pure fish taste. Susan doesn’t take pork. We added Cheesy Tofu to the soup, as these are our favorites.

Crispy Fish Skin (Appetiser)

Crispy Fish Skin is a popular snack and appetizer.

However, it was served later than expected due to a busy kitchen.

Typically, the skin is generously seasoned with a blend of salt, pepper, and various spices before being deep-fried to a delightful golden-brown crispiness.

The version we tried had a satisfyingly crunchy texture and a savory taste.

Fried Glutinous Rice Balls (Dessert)

Warm and moist, the chewy glutinous rice balls are deep-fried with crushed peanuts and sugar filling, then sprinkled with icing sugar.

Unlimited Premium Rice Promo

We shared a bowl of their unlimited premium rice.

It was Basmati!

Pulled Noodles

Thanks to the waitress’s trained pulling technique, we watched the staff pull noodles.

Service and Atmosphere

We chose to dine in midweek and were surprised to find the restaurant relatively busy Wednesday night.

Customers were arriving after 8:30 p.m.

We had a corner table and enjoyed a relaxed and pleasant dining experience.

The service at Xiangshan Fish Steamboat was exceptional.

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat Location

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat is conveniently located on the fifth floor of Gurney Plaza in Penang.

Susan and I thoroughly enjoyed our first dining experience here.

I especially thank my foodie friend Jamie, who recommended this restaurant on her Instagram story.

We loved the soup and fresh fish during our first visit.

The unique presentation of serving soup in a wooden barrel added to the charm of this restaurant.

While ordering fresh fish might be a tad pricey, it’s a worthwhile choice in a fish steamboat restaurant.

With a minimum order of 1kg, you can choose from four types: Tilapia, Toman, Patin, and Dragon Grouper.

Rest assured, the fish here is exceptionally fresh.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, which included fresh Tilapia fish served in a massive wooden bucket—a truly memorable steamboat experience.

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat Outlets

Xiangshan Fish Steamboat has ten branches in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

The newly opened Penang branch is the 11th, driven by its success in central Malaysia.

Health-conscious fish steamboat enthusiasts have eagerly awaited this northern branch.

More branches are expected to follow this growing steamboat trend.
