One of Penang’s best breakfast joints is the stand-alone Wantan Mee House at 321 Burmah Road, Pulau Tikus.

The stand-alone gem, Wantan Mee House, has become one of Penang’s finest breakfast destinations, drawing crowds for its delectable offerings.

To the locals, it’s the Wantan Mee (WTM) opposite the Balai (Pulau Tikus Police Station)

While Penang boasts numerous Wantan mee stalls, none rival the bustling ambiance of Wantan Mee House.

The eatery started with a humble beginning, originally a street cart, before securing a spot at Kedai Kopi Swee Kong, situated at the junction of Burmah Road and Solok Moulmein.

I was introduced to this culinary delight during my teenage years when I visited someone living near Burma Close.

Through the years, the business has grown and expanded. It found a new home at 321 Burmah Road and rebranded itself as Wantan Mee House.

This move facilitated a more expansive seating arrangement, accommodating a growing legion of loyal patrons.

The eatery has gained favor among regulars, often bursting at the seams, especially during the morning hours.

Unique Wantan Mee House Gravy

As far as I can remember, Wan Tan Mee House features a unique recipe with noodles drenched in an eggy gravy known as ‘Lor’ in Penang Hokkien.

The wan tan mee is served with the usual dark sauce before it is dressed in a luscious gravy, which is not commonly found elsewhere in Penang.

The garnish for the accompanying Wantan mee is lavish if you compare it to other stalls, which may be cheaper.

For the large version, RM7.50, you get

  • three golden-fried Wantan dumplings,
  • several Char Siu slices (Honey BBQ pork),
  • two parboiled Chicken Slivers,
  • two slices of Chinese Shitake Mushroom,
  • Chai Sim (Mustard Greens), and, for enthusiasts,
  • crispy golden-fried pork lard chips.

Wonton Dumplings

Two types of wontons grace the menu—deep-fried and boiled—each catering to diverse preferences.

While the deep-fried wonton is a crowd favorite due to its satisfying crunch, some patrons lean towards the boiled version.

Sometimes, I’d drop by for a bowl of wonton soup with Chai Sim for a light brunch.

The soup boasts a distinct flavor profile that sets it apart from other offerings.

The larger wontons strike a balance between richness and lightness.

The pickled green chilis provide a tantalizing acidity that beautifully offsets the richness of the sauce and gravy.
