Smartdory’s Journey to Vietnamese Cuisine
My first experience with Vietnamese street food was at a hole-in-the-wall eatery in Hong Kong almost 30 years ago.
I tried the famous Hanoian-style grilled pork with vermicelli (Bún Chả).
President Obama shared this dish with Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain.
‘Heaps of tourists have been flocking to the restaurant as well daily from different parts of the globe, excited to try out the now famous Obama Combo, which is a bowl of traditional Bun Cha paired with some deep-fried Hanoi-style spring rolls and a bottle of Hanoi beer.’
On my later trips, I enjoyed many other Vietnamese snacks and noodles.
I developed a lifelong love for bánh mì and crispy bánh xèo.
An Viet An Essence of Vietnamese Cuisine
Vietnamese cuisine blends fresh ingredients, subtle flavors, and refined techniques.
It highlights rice, noodles, seafood, vegetables, and herbs.
The Vietnamese are experts at balancing sweetness, sourness, spiciness, and umami in their dishes.
An Viet ‘Learn, Taste, and Experience’ Workshop
One of my favorite experiences for a food review was organized by the Peanut Couple, Patrick Soon and his Vietnamese wife, Anna Le, in collaboration with An Viet.

The Penang influencers had a wonderful afternoon learning about, tasting, and experiencing Vietnamese food firsthand.
Here are some of the An Viet menu items we tried;

Vietnamese Baguette with Grilled Lemongrass Chicken (Bánh Mì) – RM15.90*
Vietnamese cuisine features the bánh mì, a short baguette with a thin, crisp crust. It feels light and airy.
The bread is often split lengthwise and filled with savory ingredients, similar to a submarine sandwich. This meal is called bánh mì thịt.
Plain bánh mì is also eaten as a staple food.
Whenever I find a good bánh mì, it becomes my breakfast staple.
During my trip to Singapore in March, I discovered Vietnam’s culinary diversity, highlighted by the bánh mì.
This delicious sandwich shows the fusion of Vietnamese and French influences.
Crusty French baguettes are filled with marinated grilled meats, pickled vegetables, cilantro, and pâté.
The result is a mouthwatering mix of textures and flavors.
Bánh mì is an irresistible choice for street food lovers.
An Viet’s crispy bánh mì features an airy Vietnamese baguette.
