Smartdory’s Journey to An Viet Vietnamese Cuisine

My first experience with Vietnamese street food was at a hole-in-the-wall eatery in Hong Kong almost 30 years ago.

Surprisingly, I tried the iconic Hanoian-style grilled Pork with Vermicelli (Bún Chả), which President Obama famously shared with Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain.

‘Heaps of tourists have been flocking to the restaurant as well daily from different parts of the globe, excited to try out the now famous Obama Combo, which is a bowl of traditional Bun Cha paired with some deep-fried Hanoi-style spring rolls and a bottle of Hanoi beer.’

In subsequent trips, I tried and enjoyed many other Vietnamese snacks and noodles and developed a lifelong love for bánh mì and crispy bánh xèo.

One of the nicest experiences for a food review was organized by the Peanut Couple, Patrick Soon and his Vietnamese wife, Anna Le, in collaboration with An Viet.

YouTuber Steven Goh was on hand to help as the hype man.

The Penang influencers had a most enjoyable afternoon learning, tasting, and experiencing Vietnamese food firsthand.

Vietnamese Baguette with Grilled Lemongrass Chicken (Bánh Mì) – RM15.90*

Vietnamese cuisine uses the ‘bánh mi’, a short baguette with a thin, crisp crust and a light, airy feel.

It is often split lengthwise, filled with savory ingredients similar to a submarine sandwich, and served as a meal called ‘bánh mì thịt.’

Additionally, plain bánh mì is also eaten as a staple food.

Whenever I come across a good bánh mì, it becomes my daily breakfast staple.

During my visit to Singapore in March, I discovered Vietnam’s culinary diversity, which is beautifully exemplified by the bánh mì.

This delightful sandwich showcases the fusion of Vietnamese and French influences.

Crusty French baguettes are filled with marinated grilled meats, pickled vegetables, cilantro, and pâté.

The result is a mouthwatering combination of textures and flavors, making bánh mì an irresistible choice for street food enthusiasts.

An Viet’s crispy Bánh Mì features an airy Vietnamese baguette filled with grilled lemongrass chicken, homemade pork pâté, fresh veggies, pickles, and sriracha. Now I know exactly where to head for my daily staple.
